Three potential candidates for rumoured LEGO Technic 2024 McLaren supercar

With rumours of a $450 LEGO Technic supercar arriving sometime in summer 2024, here are three potential candidates for the upcoming racer.

Recent rumours suggest that as many as nine different LEGO Technic sets may be hitting stores shelves this summer, although that remains pure speculation for now. These might range from three affordable potential builds coming in at $49.99 up to a massive 3,893-piece model priced at $449.99.

42172 McLaren Supercar is said to be arriving August 1, 2024, but beyond a possible release date, price and piece count, we currently know next-to-nothing about the rumoured LEGO Technic set. In fact, at this stage, there’s isn’t even any hint as to which McLaren supercar the model might be based on.

The biennial subtheme of Technic supercars so far includes 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, 42083 Bugatti Chiron42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 and 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3, so anticipation will no doubt be running high for the next 1:8 scale entry.

With that in mind, here are three potential candidates for 42172 McLaren Supercar, although it’s worth noting that nothing has been confirmed by the LEGO Group regarding the set so far.

Debuting in 2017, McLaren’s twin-charged 4.0-litre V-8 supercar has been revamped for a relaunch this year, complete with updated suspension and even more horsepower. The retractable hardtop of the coupe coupled with a range of eye-catching Elite and 60th anniversary paint jobs would undoubtedly make this a must-have LEGO Technic set.

McLaren’s grand tourer was upgraded in 2023, receiving additional power, reduced weight and various styling changes. For starters, there’s a more aggressive bumper with wider air intakes, more pronounced air scoops, a new wheel design and more colours to choose from. The sleek lines of the supercar could translate well into a LEGO Technic design, almost assuring the model a place in most fan’s collections.

McLaren Ascari Ecosse

Here’s a blast from the past. Meet the McLaren Ascari Ecosse, an ultra-rare vehicle of which only 17 were ever produced. The unique-looking car has its origins as a track-only racer called the FGT that was purchased byMcLaren and features a Chevrolet 6.0-litre V8 engine. Originally priced at £80,000, a LEGO Technic version coming in at $449.99 would therefore be a much more affordable proposition.

The vehicle’s listed above have just been selected by us as possible examples of where the LEGO Technic design team could go with the rumoured 42172 McLaren Supercar. Let us know in the comments below what other racing legends you think deserve to be recreated in brick-built form.
