Closer look at new LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71039 Marvel Series 2 cardboard packaging

LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2 Collectible Minifigures are starting to show up in stores in North America, offering a closer look at the brand new cardboard packaging.

The LEGO Group is replacing the standard foil bags used for previous Collectible Minifigures series with more environmentally-friendly cardboard boxes, as part of its wider pursuit of plastic-free packaging by 2025. The first series to use the new blind boxes is 71039 Marvel Series 2, which launches worldwide on September 1 – but is already appearing on shelves in North America.

YouTuber Ashnflash has managed to pick up a fresh box of 71039 Marvel Series 2 characters, and has now published an unboxing video that gives us a much better look at the new packaging. Each display box contains 36 minifigures, matching the number included in a single box of 71037 Series 24 minifigures, but with different proportions to accommodate the new individual boxes (which are bigger than the previous foil bags).

The minifigures are spread out across two levels, with two rows of nine minifigures per top and bottom level. There’s also a piece of white cardboard separating them vertically. That’s what you can expect if you manage to find an untouched box in store (which is probably the ideal scenario for finding minifigures, now that they’re truly blind – at least once the box distribution has been confirmed).

Despite suspicions from some corners of the internet that the individual minifigure boxes would contain plastic bags anyway, the new packaging is actually completely plastic-free. Ashnflash has opened all 36 minifigures from his box, and the parts for each one are simply loose inside. The only additional packaging is more cardboard to protect the capes for characters such as Storm and Agatha.

The boxes themselves appear to be glued together, meanwhile, so there’s no tape involved either. That should make it tougher for unscrupulous shoppers to prise open the boxes and check their contents, hopefully discouraging tampering in the absence of being able to feel what’s inside. It does mean that completing a full collection of all 12 new characters is going to be trickier than ever, but there may yet be legitimate ways around that problem…
