Comparing LEGO Ideas 21349 Tuxedo Cat to the original submission

The design of 21349 Tuxedo Cat has definitely changed considerably compared to Damian Andres’ original LEGO Ideas submission.

The LEGO Group today officially revealed its next LEGO Ideas release, with 21349 Tuxedo Cat due to launch on June 1 priced at £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99. The 1,710-piece build features a black and white feline that comes with two separate sets of tiles for eyes and several points of articulation for displaying the completed model.

21349 Tuxedo Cat is based on an original LEGO Ideas design from Damian Andres (aka The Yellow Brick) titled ‘Cat,’ that managed to reach the 10,000 supporters mark in the third review of 2022. However, a lot has changed since then, with Damian’s model having been based on his own pet, Miro, while the finished version has undergone something of a major transformation from a Siamese-Birman cross to a two-tone moggy.

The subtle brown, tan and black elements of ‘Cat’ have now been replaced with simple black and white pieces, closer in appearance to an alternate version Damian revealed in an update on his project page. While the original LEGO Ideas submission and 21349 Tuxedo Cat do share similar poses, the latter has a number of points of articulation, although it doesn’t appear to be fully poseable. In fact ‘Cat’ didn’t seem to have any articulation whatsoever, stuck as it was in one static position.

Although 21349 Tuxedo Cat does boast two separate sets of eyes with which to customise the model, it is lacking the accessories from the original LEGO Ideas submission. ‘Cat’ included a brick-built bowl with milk and a fish bone and the black and white version came with a yellow and brown toy mouse.

Despite the palette swap differences between the two builds and a lack of any accessories in the final set, 21349 Tuxedo Cat still seems to stay faithful to the spirit of the original LEGO Ideas submission and should certainly be popular with lovers of all things feline.

21349 Tuxedo Cat will be released at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores on June 1, 2024, for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99.
