Comparing LEGO Ideas 21357 Luxo Jr. to its original fan design
Every LEGO Ideas fan design goes through some changes to get onto shelves, and that includes the newly-revealed 21357 Luxo Jr.
The LEGO Group and Pixar have collaborated to bring fan designer Toby Brett’s concept to life in the form of 21357 Luxo Jr. The display-ready model features 613 pieces and is available to pre-order now ahead of its release on June 1, retailing at £59.99 in the UK, $69.99 in the US, and €69.99 in Europe.
Although the basic idea of a brick-built lamp and ball accessory remains the same on the face of it, there are some little tweaks to the original design that we’ve spotted. Here’s a closer look at what’s new.
Same silhouette, different details

As you can see in the two pictures above, with the fan design on the left, the basic idea remains consistent. However, the details of getting to this point have changed somewhat, with a new construction on the base, presumably for stability. Instead of being made up of two connected tiles, the base is now thicker and seems to be made up of bricks, with a dome on the top.
There are also some slight differences in the build that goes into the arm of the lamp, although the same exposed stud, technical style remains, staying true to the original inspiration. Notably, there’s also what appears to be a printed element with details around the base of the lampshade, rather than the open holes that appeared in Toby’s original design.
Hidden references

Although there aren’t any pictures yet of what this looks like in practice, the official description of the set states that the brick-built Pixar ball opens up to reveal hidden easter eggs inspired by Disney and Pixar movies, including Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Monsters, Inc. Toy Story, and Finding Nemo. That’s a new easter egg that’s introduced for this final version of the set that wasn’t present in the original design.
Lamp versus ball

Speaking of the ball, there’s also a fun new way to display the set sitting on top of the Pixar ball. Luxo Jr. is best known for jumping on and squishing other objects, including the ‘I’ from Pixar, so being able to display 21357 Luxo Jr. doing just that is a fun inclusion and change for Pixar fans.
