Comparing every LEGO NINJAGO Destiny’s Bounty set

A new era of LEGO NINJAGO is upon us and that means a new Destiny’s Bounty. Here’s how the sixth version of the ship stacks up to the rest.

71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time is launching in a few weeks alongside the rest of the LEGO NINJAGO Dragons Rising selection. The ship dates back to one of the earliest seasons of the original series and it has a legacy in the theme.

With over a decade of difference, the new Destiny’s Bounty has a few changes and similarities to the rest of the ship’s models.

Figurehead

The dragon figurehead of the Destiny’s Bounty is an iconic part of the model and though the design has changed with each version of the ship, it has almost always been a single static red head, apart from 70618 Destiny’s Bounty.

71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time changes that with a light blue figurehead belonging to a living dragon that nests in the front of the ship, drastically reducing the interior space.

Size

70618 Destiny’s Bounty is by far the largest model of the ship with 2,295 pieces, followed by 71705 Destiny’s Bounty with 1,781 and then the 2023 set.

Despite the difference in piece count, the deck space of 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time looks similar to 70738 Final Flight of Destiny’s Bounty with around 500 fewer pieces.

Interior

The Destiny’s Bounty is a home to the ninja, though some of its earliest builds have no interior space. 9446 Destiny’s Bounty has a covered area at the back of the ship, but it’s not quite enough for minifigures to live in. The 2017 model had a similar amount of covered space.

70618 Destiny’s Bounty changed that with rooms below and above deck and the Legacy model had a good amount of rooms too. 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time is more limited on space thanks to the dragon nesting at the front but features a living quarters, a navigation room and storage space in the roof.

Sails

Every Destiny’s Bounty apart from 71749 Final Flight of Destiny’s Bounty and 70618 Destiny’s Bounty has featured two sails that can fold apart in flight.

That’s no different in 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time, which debuts a new pattern for the sails.

Features

Another iconic feature of the Destiny’s Bounty is its rotating engines for flight and sailing and every Destiny’s Bounty set has included the ability to spin or unfold them, usually as the main function.

The description for 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – race against time states that its engines can rotate, but that has yet to be showcased in product images.
