Despite 21372 La Catrina having a very considered look, the designers behind the LEGO Ideas set are hoping builders will create their own custom versions.
Those following the story of fan designer yop1172’s winning 10K LEGO Ideas submission will soon be able to pick up 21372 La Catrina, with the 1,212-piece model debuting next month. The development of the build required close collaboration between the LEGO Group and José Miguel Medina Pérez, as well as Mexican team members, but the finished product doesn’t have to be the end of the set’s tale.
In a recent roundtable interview with fan media, the LEGO Ideas designers behind the upcoming creation spoke with Brick Fanatics about 21372 La Catrina and discussed just where builders might be able to take the model next.
“There are definitely a lot of elements used in the model that are pretty widespread,” said LEGO designer Jim Clayton. “I would say these bigger black elements are in some colours, not a ton, but particularly in the dress you're using this leaf piece a lot, and also the really small 1x1 flower piece.
“Those come in many different colours and in different sets, so just with your own personal collection, there's a good chance that many people will have the opportunity to change it. So, in those highlight colour details on the lower part of the dress, that's definitely a possibility for people to change.”
“I think that's also why the black is a really nice choice,” added LEGO Ideas design manager Jordan David Scott, “because it gives you a foundation where you can then add the colour to it. As Jim said, those slopes only really come in black and a few other muted colours, maybe a red, potentially, but then you can add the colours in your own way and really make it your own, so I think the black was the right choice for the overall dress.”
One other aspect of 21372 La Catrina that’s ripe for customisation is the ability to place the LEGO Ideas model in a number of different display poses, opening up possibilities for how the build can be shown off.
“I think there's a lot of opportunity for people to make this their own as well,” said Jim. “I think both in how she looks, and she has a lot of different poses you can do, like every day. Sometimes when I was working this model, I would come to my desk and she'd be doing a different pose, because people just loved to move her around.
“So, I think there's the colours and the design itself, but then also in all the different poses you can do with her, so that people can, in multiple ways, make this their own La Catrina.”
