We’ll find out next month if 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss can snatch the crown for most metallic gold pieces in a LEGO set away from previous glittering models.
The LEGO Art theme officially unveiled 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss yesterday, a 4,000-piece build dropping on August 1. The upcoming Masterpiece model recreates the Austrian artist’s original celebrated painting by using multiple metallic gold bricks, but will it include more of the shiny elements than previous record-holders?
When 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech dropped back in 2020, the LEGO Monkie Kid set came with 119 drum-lacquered metallic gold pieces and was then followed in 2021 by 76191 Infinity Gauntlet, a 590-piece LEGO Marvel set that boasted 153 of those shiny parts.

Fast forward to 2024 and the soon-to-retire 31213 Mona Lisa currently has the honour of containing the most metallic gold bricks in any LEGO set to date, with 314 of its 1,503 pieces comprised of the elements, all of which are used to construct the frame around the recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic masterpiece.
However, that could well all be about to change with the upcoming arrival of 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss. The LEGO Art set includes what looks to be a high number of metallic gold pieces used to replicate the various techniques the Austrian artist employed to create his painting, although the exact number has yet to be confirmed.

The Kiss was primarily inspired by Byzantine gold mosaics Gustav Klimt once saw on a trip to Italy and his appreciation of Japanese lacquer work, with both techniques replicated in the LEGO Art build.
However, gold was more than just a decorative feature in for Klimt's work and the artist was specifically interested in exploring his paintings as precious, decorative and meaningful objects in their own right. He often employed gold leaf, gold dust and fine gold powder in his paintings, and sometimes brass, silver and platinum leaf too.

Whether 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss has what it takes to knock 31213 Mona Lisa off its golden throne is anyone’s guess at this stage, but we’ll find out more for sure when the LEGO Art model appears in the weeks to come.
31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss is due to be released on August 1 for Insiders members, while everyone else can pick up the set from August 4. The LEGO Art build will be priced at £269.99 in the UK, for $299.99 in the US and comes in at €299.99 in Europe.
