21327 Typewriter designer inspired best feature in LEGO 10323 PAC-MAN Arcade
10323 PAC-MAN Arcade’s best feature was inspired by 21327 Typewriter’s LEGO designer’s solution to a seemingly impossible task.
In a recent roundtable interview with 10323 PAC-MAN Arcade designer Sven Franic, it was revealed that the impressive working maze mechanism is inspired by one designer’s approach to the daunting question of whether a working PAC-MAN maze was even possible.
“We wanted to have some movement in the maze because that’s the main part of the game and the maze is the part that you will be immersed in when you’re when you’re at the arcade,” explained Sven.
“We just didn’t know if we could actually do it. One of our designers James May, he worked on 21327 Typewriter with Wes Talbott before he made a model that had a function that sort of worked. But it was just very large and clunky.”
“It gave us an idea of what we could do, but then we were still unsure, and we developed it from there. We kind of committed to doing an arcade anyway.”
Exactly what set is being referred to is unknown, but 21339 BTS Dynamite was designed by James May following 21327 Typewriter and its multi-minifigure turntable has similarities to the maze in 10323 PAC-MAN Arcade. Whatever it was, it thankfully spurred some creative thinking from the design team and brought us 10323 PAC-MAN Arcade’s best function.
The maze mechanism in 10323 PAC-MAN Arcade is a sight to behold and we’ve got a preview of what to expect in our detailed report, as well as a review to read.
