Every LEGO Marvel set retiring in 2021 and beyond – August update

Twenty LEGO Marvel sets are leaving shelves in 2021, but one of this year’s Spider-Man sets will remain on sale all the way into 2023.

On the chopping block for this year – at least according to Brick Fanatics’ sources – are several sets that only launched a matter of months ago, including 76173 Spider-Man and Ghost Rider vs. Carnage and 76174 Spider-Man’s Monster Truck vs. Mysterio.

They’ll join a bunch of 2020-and-earlier sets in leaving production lines by the end of 2021. Once the LEGO Group stops manufacturing those models – which could theoretically happen any time between now and the end of the year, if it hasn’t already – and the current supply sells through, they’ll be gone for good.

Probably the biggest surprise on this list, though, is 76175 Attack on the Spider Lair. We panned the 466-piece set in our review, calling it a ‘total (web-)swing and a miss’, and we’ve even put together a list of five sets to buy instead. But it’s clearly found an audience among LEGO fans, because it’s due to stick around on shelves into 2023.

Only 76178 Daily Bugle can match the staying power of that Spidey set among current releases, and nobody expected that newly-released direct-to-consumer set to retire any time soon. By contrast, this year’s Infinity Saga and What If…? sets will be gone by the end of 2022.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
