First LEGO Despicable Me 4 sets revealed

The LEGO Group has revealed a first look at two of four new LEGO Despicable Me 4 sets arriving in May, including 75583 Minions and Gru’s Family Mansion.

Four years after it first embraced the franchise with Minions: The Rise of Gru, the LEGO Group is once again diving back into Illumination’s most iconic animated series for the upcoming release of Despicable Me 4. It’s not quite for a 102,000-piece supersized Minion, as the LEGO Group’s 2024 April fool’s gag suggested, but there are at least four brand new sets on the horizon.

The company has shown off two of those today, including 75582 Brick-Built Gru and Minions and 75583 Minions and Gru’s Family Mansion. Both of those sets are due to release on May 1, 2024, or two months ahead of the film’s cinematic debut in July.

“Using the LEGO brand’s creativity and endless possibilities, this partnership between Illumination, Universal Products & Experiences and the LEGO Group celebrates fun storytelling,” said LEGO designer Solvita Akmene. “Fans told us they were really missing LEGO Minions and we are happy to bring this world of mischievous fun back to them through exciting new play experiences. We hope the new sets will delight any fan – small or big!”

“Illumination’s Despicable Me franchise is beloved by fans across the globe, and our partnership with the LEGO Group brings together two iconic brands,” added Rafael Macias, Executive Vice President & Global Commercial Officer for Universal Products & Experiences.

“The LEGO Despicable Me 4 sets offer new storytelling opportunities and provide imaginative ways to bring to life the joy, action and sweet-but-subversive humour of this record-setting franchise. We’re as excited as the fans for Despicable Me 4 and can’t wait for their reaction to the new film-inspired LEGO sets.”

75582 Brick-Built Gru and Minions

Price: £49.99 / $54.99 / €54.99 Pieces: 839 Release date: May 1, 2024

Catering to the same audience as 2020’s 75551 Brick-built Minions and their Lair – which is to say, those fans especially interested in a LEGO Minions display model – 75582 Brick-Built Gru and Minions looks to pack in elements of interactivity through those splat gears in its base. Presumably the Minions (and Gru) can all dance and boogie in turn, at least for as long as you can look into Gru’s cursed eyes.

75583 Minions and Gru’s Family Mansion

Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 868 Release date: May 1, 2024

Dwarfing the price tag of all previous LEGO Minions sets, 75583 Minions and Gru’s Family Mansion reaches for the stars with a brick-built recreation of Gru’s imposing home, a treehouse, five minifigures, a baby and several Minion characters. Minifigure Gru is missing his crucial, character-defining appendage – you’ll find no reuse of the Pinocchio headpiece here – while the Minions take on new and abstract forms.

Look out for the final two LEGO Despicable Me 4 sets soon. The movie lands in cinemas on July 3 in the US, and July 12 in the UK.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
