First review of LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2 criticises character choices

An early review of LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71039 Marvel Series 2 has criticised the character choices in the Disney+ line-up, but hails many of the included minifigures as ‘incredible’.

The inaugural Collectible Minifigures series to come in blind boxes (rather than foil bags) doesn’t launch widely until September 1, but early copies are already starting to show up in some stores in North America. YouTuber Ashnflash has managed to procure a full case of 36 minifigures in Canada, and has now published a full review of all 12 individual Disney+ characters.

This fresh batch of Marvel minifigures pulls from MCU series including Hawkeye, Echo, She-Hulk, Werewolf by Night, X-Men ’97, What If…? and Moon Knight. Ashnflash has taken issue with that assortment in his review, pointing out that multiple shows – including Echo, X-Men ’97 and What If…? Season 2 – may not actually land on Disney+ in 2023, and could therefore have been saved for a hypothetical Series 3.

“Is this the 12 that I would pick? Absolutely not,” he says. “I don’t think that the X-Men figures should be here – just save them for their own sets. I think that Ms. Marvel is the biggest miss here for sure, that’s so frustrating that she’s not here… she could have had such a cool figure, so detailed.”

All the same, Ashnflash does have plenty of praise for almost every minifigure that is included in 71039 Marvel Series 2. He highlights a couple of missed opportunities – She-Hulk might have benefited from the longer arms and legs used for Avatar’s minifigures, while the Ant-Man microfigure could use new printing – but on the whole, nearly every character has at least one feature, detail or piece worth shouting about.

He hails Moon Knight as ‘incredible’, for example, pointing to the minifigure’s ‘insane printing’ on his arms and dual-moulded legs. The YouTuber also highlights Echo’s new hairpiece, which actually has a print on the braid – which is so subtle he notices it in real time – and even finds pros in what might have first seemed like underwhelming characters, such as in Werewolf by Night’s arm printing.

Elsewhere, Ashnflash calls out Wolverine as his ‘least favourite figure’ in the entire series, stating that while it’s a ‘great-looking’ version of the X-Men character, he’s disappointed by the lack of a neck attachment for the Marvel mutant – especially because Storm gets a similar piece. He also says it’s a reminder that the X-Men ’97 characters could easily appear in regular sets, so perhaps feel like wasted slots in a Collectible Minifigures series.

More reviews of 71039 Marvel Series 2 will presumably start to pop up online once the embargo lifts proper, but this one has at least given us a first glimpse at the minifigures in hand – along with a closer look at their new packaging and North American box distribution.

71039 Marvel Series 2 launches September 1 at LEGO.com, in LEGO Stores and through third-party retailers, priced at £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 per minifigure.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
