Five first impressions of LEGO 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition

LEGO Harry Potter 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition is packed with details to adore and first impressions aren’t bad.

Releasing September 1 for VIPs, or September 4 for everyone else, for £369.99 / $429.99 / €429.99, 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition is a uniquely massive model that finishes the main portion of LEGO Diagon Alley.

While a standard Gringotts set would have sufficed in expanding 75978 Diagon Alley, the LEGO Harry Potter design team have taken things to the next, lower, level and there’s a lot to see in 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition.

5 – We’ve never seen a LEGO set like it

Compared to previous Gringotts models, as well as other multi-level LEGO sets, 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition is wholly unique in the way that it holds the street level above.

The baseplate simply sits on top, stopped from falling off by a few bricks. It’s a solution that’s (hopefully) both sturdy and versatile for theoretically easy display with or without the underground section.

4 – An unfortunate pair of stickers

The stickers for the sign at the entrance of the bank are unfortunately placed to leave a gap between ‘GRINGOT’ and ‘TS’.

While it should be an easy fix by either using some scissors to shorten the stickers or carefully placing one over the other, it could have been helped through a couple of prints.

3 – It’s getting easier to populate Diagon Alley

75978 Diagon Alley at £389.99 / $449.99 / €449.99 features 14 minifigures across its seven businesses. While 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition is similarly priced at £369.99 / $429.99 / €429.99, it has 13 minifigures for two businesses (and the underground section.

With all of these combined and even discounting a couple of duplicates, LEGO Diagon Alley is about to be much more populated than ever before.

2 – It’s tall

It’s not hard to tell from the official images but rest assured, 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition is a tall set and should stand well above most model.

With the underground section and the dragon, it measures 75cm high. The bank on its own is 36cm tall too, while 75978 Diagon Alley is 29cm tall at its peak.

1 – The coins have a familiar LEGO dragon

Coins are an important part of any bank and in 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition, they feature a new design that LEGO Castle enthusiasts will love.

Usually emblazoned with a dragon with its wings spread, 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank Collectors’ Edition’s coins have the classic LEGO Castle dragon instead, and there’s even a bigger coin included to appreciate the design.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
