Five other creatures we think deserve to be recreated with LEGO

With rumours about the release date of the new LEGO Icons Insects set swirling around, we thought of a few other creatures that would be great to see in LEGO form.

The LEGO Icons project, designed by José María, also known as hachiroku24, was approved in October of last year. The original design proposed having five brick built insects for the set, those being the Blue Morpho Butterfly, Hercules Beetle, Asian Lady Beetle, Western Honey Bee and Praying Mantis.

Having been inspired by this, we had a think about what other creatures would make good LEGO creations. Take a look below to see what we came up with.

5 – Jellyfish

The recent LEGO City set 60379 Deep-Sea Explorer Submarine gave us a little hint of what a LEGO jellyfish could look like, with the mini builds coming in both pink and blue.

However, with so many new LEGO elements in varying different colours, we think that a much more detailed version, similar to the insects in 21342 Insects, could be a great display piece. Getting a jellyfish to stand upright wouldn’t be a problem either, as long as there’s a clear stand with it.

4 – Dragonfly

LEGO 40244 Dragonfly

One of the most interesting things about the dragonfly are of course their wings, and after seeing the Blue Morpho Butterfly in LEGO form we think that another flying creature could be a fun LEGO addition.

Unlike a butterfly, the elongated wing shape of a dragonfly could be visually interesting, particularly if made with several clear LEGO elements rather than just one piece. 40244 Dragonfly in 2017 gave us an idea of what a dragonfly in LEGO form could look like, but we think that a more detailed version could be fun.

3 – Firefly

21342 Insects butterfly

One flying creature that we haven’t really seen in LEGO form at all before is the firefly (evidently not including the minifigure character from DC). With movable wings and antennas, it would certainly match the insect theme, and could be done without any complicated printing.

However, the main attraction of a LEGO version of a firefly would of course be the light, which could be made with LEGO light bricks (just like in 21325 Medieval Blacksmith).

2 – Hedgehog

Putting Sonic aside, we’ve seen LEGO hedgehogs with 40212 Hedgehog in 2016, as well as the now retired 40171 LEGO Friends Buildable Hedgehog Storage, have given us some ideas about what a LEGO Hedgehog would look like. LEGO Friends even have the two mini hedgehog characters Oscar and Jojo that appear in a number of sets.

However, none of these sets actually give the hedgehogs their defining feature – the spikes. The Sonic the Hedgehog minifigures do make an attempt, but they aren’t quite the pinnacle of realism that we had in mind. Using LEGO elements similar to those used for the Praying Mantis could work pretty nicely.

1 – Gecko

While we have actually seen brick built LEGO geckos before, an updated version is definitely overdue. We’ve seen the one piece gecko from LEGO Friends 41735 Mobile Tiny House, as well as 11953 Gecko from LEGO Creator in 2021.

The latter build came as a magazine gift and, as a result, was fairly tiny. With plenty of brick elements that could be used to make up the bendy tail and limbs of the animal, a more advanced colourful LEGO gecko would definitely be interesting to see.
