Jim Lee discusses sketching for LEGO Art Batman set

A new interview on the official online LEGO store discusses the creative process behind the design of 31205 Jim Lee Batman Collection.

One of the newest LEGO Art sets for 2022 is 31205 Jim Lee Batman Collection, a mosaic with multiple DC portrait options made in partnership with artist Jim Lee. How this partnership affected the development and design process of the LEGO Art model has been shared in an interview with Jim Lee and colourist Alex Sinclair from LEGO.com

“We have our style and so how do you translate it given these parameters, and still make it look visually aesthetically cool, but also recognizably ours and I think that was a big hurdle,” shares Jim. “First, it was converting the mindset to a different medium. And knowing the image was in a square format was one of the largest considerations.”

“That was my main challenge, create the level of depth that I’m used to but only with a limited palette.” commented Alex regarding the selection of studs available for the set.

Once the artwork was finished, the designs were transformed into a brick-built mosaic by designer Kitt Kossmann, with Alex and Jim also discussing how this process brought the build to life.

“Realizing every dot was critical… it was fascinating seeing her style and translating into the LEGO style,” noted Jim.

“I was blown away by how incredibly close to the art the final product looks… it actually looks like a Jim Lee drawing,” shared Alex.

You can pick up 31205 Jim Lee Batman Collection from the official online store now for £104.99 / $119.99 / €119.99. You might choose to get multiple copies to make the alternate Batman and Catwoman artwork too.
