What LEGO Ideas 21347 Red London Telephone Box can and can’t do

LEGO Ideas 21347 Red London Telephone Box has been revealed, confirming exactly what it can and can’t do – and some are unexpected.

Ahead of its launch next month, 21347 Red London Telephone Box‘s final model has been showcased and there have been some changes to the original project including in its functionality. While this recreation celebrates the iconic red telephone box, it’s not entirely functional but has a few surprising features to look forward to.

Here’s what the new LEGO Ideas 21347 Red London Telephone Box can and can’t do as you might – and might not – expect.

Hold your phone

Unlike the original project, 21347 Red London Telephone Box is designed to hold a smartphone next to the telephone box model. It should make for a fun and unique display and there’s a hole in the wall that seems to be for a charging cable to go through.

Ring

LEGO System sound bricks have not been seen in a set since 2011 and 21347 Red London Telephone Box could have been a good place to bring them back, recreating the classic ringing sound at the push of a button. That’s not the case, unfortunately, but the LEGO Ideas set doesn’t necessarily need one.

Light up, but not where you’d think

The lamppost in 21347 Red London Telephone Box doesn’t light up, but a light brick is included to illuminate the inside of the telephone box with a warm yellow glow. Both locations would have been suitable for a light brick, but admittedly it probably wouldn’t have fit in the lamppost.

Make calls

No, you cannot use 21347 Red London Telephone Box as a real phone so don’t trade in your smartphone just yet. It cannot make and manage calls, despite including two brick-built phones to display inside (one at a time). Realistically, we’re not sure whether anyone was expecting a LEGO phone box to make calls, but rest assured that it can’t.

21347 Red London Telephone Box launches for LEGO Insiders on February 1, and for everyone else on February 4, at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores.
