Mattel is adding two Masters of the Universe display sets to its Brick Shop collection, representing a change of direction for its relatively new construction toy brand.
So far, Mattel Brick Shop – which the company has positioned as a direct competitor to LEGO – has mostly served up fancy brick-built versions of Hot Wheels cars that incorporate specialised metal elements, alongside a single He-Man playset. Mattel has recently unveiled two new additions to the range, in the form of buildable display sets hooked to Masters of the Universe.
The franchise is enjoying a resurgence thanks to its latest live-action movie, and Mattel is hoping to build on that hype with these two 17+ sets. First up is a 503-piece Skeletor Bust, which has what we’ll call a familiar form factor. This one’s due to retail for £43.99 in the UK, and includes three interchangeable face plates, a light brick and multiple points of articulation.
That set will be joined by a 1,098-piece Havoc Staff, recreating the weapon wielded by Skeletor in the He-Man series (and the latest movie). There’s a light brick included here too, illuminating the green eyes of the ram’s head, and it can be mounted on its display stand or on a wall. This one can be yours for £59.99 when it hits shelves.
There’s no concrete word on when either of these will launch yet – they’re both just listed as ‘Coming soon’ at UK retailers. But as a duo they represent a new direction for Mattel Brick Shop, away from anything we’ve seen before… and perhaps more along the lines of what you might expect from a LEGO Masters of the Universe range.
In other Mattel Brick Shop news, the company has also announced a new Halo UNSC M12 Warthog set, which includes 935 pieces and – like the two Masters of the Universe sets – is marketed to ‘collectors’ with a 17+ age recommendation. This one launches September 30 and will retail for £69.99 in the UK.
All of these new sets speak to the ‘new and familiar IP’ that Mattel’s Head of Building Sets Roberto Stanichi promised would join the range in 2026. It'll be interesting to see what comes next...
