LEGO How to Train Your Dragon and Fast & Furious: What's next?

Tease of a LEGO DREAMZzz collaboration indicates that two partnerships are to continue, but what's next for LEGO How to Train Your Dragon and Fast & Furious?

One of the biggest LEGO surprises of the year was just announced in the form of a crossover between LEGO DREAMZzz, How to Train Your Dragon and Fast & Furious. It's not something that anyone was expecting, especially when all of the LEGO DREAMZzz sets currently on shelves are scheduled to retire at the end of 2026.

More LEGO DREAMZzz models may be coming next year, but there are no such rumours at the time of writing. LEGO themes only retire everything available at once when they are about to come to an end, but such a fate has not been confirmed for DREAMZzz.

It's possible that this collaboration is a way to use DREAMZzz to promote two other properties that are currently active in the LEGO portfolio, rather than the other way around. It's comparable to the NINJAGO crossover DREAMZzz hosted, where the two themes promoted each other.

Assuming that DREAMZzz is being used as a way to at least partially promote the LEGO How to Train Your Dragon and Fast & Furious sets, this crossover may be a sign of things to come.

There are six LEGO Fast & Furious models on shelves right now as part of Technic and Speed Champions. These include play features, minifigures, and appeal to a wide age range. These models include 42231 Dodge Charger R/T and 77260 Fast & Furious Toyota Supra MK4. 

The description for the DREAMZzz teaser reveals that the minifigure characters of the original theme will be driving cars in the crossover. The three Speed Champions models based on the franchise would serve this purpose well, while promoting them.

How to Train Your Dragon is an entirely different story. The plot of the collaboration is confirmed to feature multiple dragons from Berk as well as a minifigure of Hiccup. No such official minifigure design currently exists, and the only model based on the movies is 10375 How to Train Your Dragon: Toothless.

That set is currently scheduled to retire in 2028, and while it could certainly be the subject of promotion as part of this collaboration, it is designed for a much older audience than DREAMZzz targets. It is also not at the same scale and proportion as the Toothless we see in the teaser trailer, which will likely feature in the crossover.

There are no other LEGO How to Train Your Dragon sets currently on shelves, never mind any with minifigures. The presence of both an accurately-proportioned Toothless in this trailer and an official LEGO Hiccup minifigure in this crossover suggests that there may be more to come for this partnership.

That's only speculation on our part, and nothing more is confirmed or rumoured, but it would be odd for DREAMZzz to promote an 18+ build solely. LEGO fans online have sufficiently demonstrated that a minifigure-scale Toothless is possible, and 10375 How to Train Your Dragon: Toothless isn't what many were expecting from the first set in the franchise.

We'll have to see what comes next from LEGO How to Train Your Dragon, if anything. However, it wouldn't be the first time that a new collaboration based on an animated property started with a buildable figure before moving to minifigures – just look at Shrek or Pokémon.

For now, this LEGO DREAMZzz crossover will be interesting to see when it is available, but no release date has been confirmed.
