LEGO Star Wars 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter review

Is there enough shine to 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter to make it a worthy addition to the LEGO Star Wars UCS line?

Coming in at 1,809 pieces and two minifigures for £239.99 / $249.99 / €249.99, 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter hasn’t had the smoothest reception ahead of its May 1 release. Last year’s May the Fourth headline release – 75409 Jango Fett’s Starship – offered 2,970 pieces with two minifigures, for a price of £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99, making for a difficult comparison for 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter. Is this really the cost of silver (LEGO) these days, and is there enough value to be found at this much higher price-per-piece ratio for 2026?

With 75331 The Razor Crest now retired but LEGO Star Wars contributing a full range of sets to tie in with the mammoth marketing effort behind The Mandalorian and Grogu, releasing at the end of May, there’s not a more timely moment to base the next Ultimate Collector Series set on Mando’s other very grey ship, the repurposed, stripped-back Naboo N-1 Starfighter.

In the form of 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter, we have everything experienced LEGO Star Wars fans have come to expect from a UCS set, and that new fans will justifiably be drawn to – this is a great-looking, authentic-feeling and highly-detailed LEGO model that both explores and pays tribute to its source material in ways any smaller LEGO set simply cannot.

That’s not to say it’s a lot greyer than any of us would have hoped, given how shiny and silver the version we see Mando piloting on screen is. Given the already higher price-per-piece ratio this UCS set has, presumably because of the silver drum-lacquered pieces used across the front (to signify the break in the paintwork between the original silver and formerly yellow and now stripped back silver), it’s an easy conclusion to draw that budget impacted what was possible here.

The result more or less satisfies, but it does colour the build process somewhat – not that distinguishing between hundreds of silver LEGO pieces would have been any easier, but when you get a really grey LEGO Star Wars model (and let’s be honest, we’ve seen a fair few over the years), the experience doesn’t hold your full attention when at UCS level you’d expect otherwise.

It’s not a dull or simplistic build by any stretch, but it’s certainly a build best broken up into three or four sittings. Hidden beneath that sea of grey LEGO parts is a plethora of innovative and interesting building techniques. Across the board, the LEGO Group has really upped its game in recent years with its instructions for sets, and 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter is no exception, for how a set with relative symmetry not once feels repetitive to put together. The pacing of the build is good, blending a nice mix of intricacy and achievement. Whilst the intricacy is a bit harder when everything is one colour, it’s still pretty interesting, and the sense of progress at the end of each bag is substantial – you’re building as big as you are building detailed.

Once complete 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter really does impress for how big it is and how well shaped it is. The N-1 Starfighter isn’t a flat ship with lovely, simple perpendicular angles across it – its bodywork is covered in subtle curves and changes in direction, and the angles of its wings and frame are far more complex and really quite non-linear.

The build behind 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter delivers on all that complexity and accuracy in some highly innovative ways, way more secure than you may expect it to otherwise be. Yes, certain parts do want to ping off if you hold it incorrectly or knock the long, thin, pointed parts, but for what is such a slender design, this is a LEGO set that is impressively stable.

75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter looks the part from any angle, including the underside, where a lot of work has gone into rounding and covering what would otherwise be a lot of anti-studs, and it is displayable in any one of four directions on the included display stand, which shouldn’t be underrated.

It’s impressive in size, design and looks and, in part for imagining how much a truly all-silver version would cost, the colour isn’t too hard to accept in the end. The included minifigures are inevitable for who they are, but it’s a bit of a shame that there’s nothing exclusive about them.

And when value is at the forefront of consideration for this set, that’s a more significant observation to include. Ultimately, 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter is costlier than most other UCS sets currently and previously available. Whilst the reasons for this are understandable, it doesn’t make it any more palatable to fork out the money for.

Our honest opinion: 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter is mighty impressive and delivers in every way a LEGO Star Wars UCS set should. But, it is backed into an impossible compromise with the silver parts, meaning that at that price it does underdeliver on value.
