LEGO 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City visual tour and gallery

Take a street-level tour around Batman’s home turf with our visual guide to 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, a sprawling collision between LEGO Art and LEGO DC.

Built with a 3D-relief style not unlike 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night, 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City takes a deep dive into Batman: The Animated Series for the Caped Crusader’s 85th anniversary. But with 4,210 pieces in the box, it’s no small ask of LEGO DC fans: you can expect to pay £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99 for this at retail.

If you’re trying to decide whether it’s worth that much of your LEGO budget come April 1, join us for a visual tour of everything 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City has to offer – from its four brand new and exclusive minifigures to some of the details you might not have spotted from a quick glance at the initial images.

LEGO Batman 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City build

If you were holding out for a minifigure-scale Batman: The Animated Series LEGO set, best keep hoping: 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City is designed to microscale, which is the only conceivable way the LEGO Group could have captured the entire city in a single LEGO set. The model looks like a blend of LEGO Art sets – spy that black frame – and Architecture, using plenty of cool building techniques and unusual elements to bring its vista to life.

Chances are good that the vast majority of its 4,210 pieces are pretty small as a result – that would explain the favourable price-per-piece ratio – but it will likely all add up to a pretty unorthodox and interesting building experience.

LEGO Batman 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City techniques

Microscale builders will find a lot to enjoy and appreciate in 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, from the way the LEGO DC team has captured the Batmobile and Batwing across just a handful of pieces to how the set plays with scale to give a sense of forced perspective (check out the two different sizes of police blimps). New parts abound, too: that kite-shaped tile looks brand new to us, while the set also has its fair share of printed pieces where stickers would be too difficult to align (the Bat-signal, for example).

It’s also worth just drawing attention to the striking red backdrop of the set, too, which makes for a really dramatic display. Combine that with its art deco trappings and you’ve got a LEGO Batman set that genuinely stands out. The ‘90s clearly predates the World’s Greatest Detective working exclusively in black (or very, very, very dark grey).

LEGO Batman 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City details

If there’s one thing you need from a set like 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, it’s details. And it isn’t short on them: everywhere you turn, there’s something new to take in. It’s the kind of wall art that will pull in passers-by and not let them leave until they’ve devoured every inch of the frame, from that bold and brilliant Bat-signal to the secret details revealed only by lifting away sections of its buildings.

Those include the interiors to multiple areas across Gotham, such as the Batcave, Wayne Manor, Gotham City Police Station, Joker’s Amusement Area and more. (Fingers crossed the ‘Jokers’ sticker gets an apostrophe with a revised sticker sheet down the line, though.)

LEGO Batman 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City Easter eggs

As well as the obvious details, 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City looks to be crammed with all manner of Easter eggs, signalling it as a real love letter to Batman: The Animated Series. Nestled within the microscale skyline are monochrome stickered tiles featuring members of the Caped Crusader’s rogue’s gallery, from Joker and Harley – also included as actual minifigures – to Poison Ivy. Fingers crossed there are others in the mix we just can’t see from official images.

What actually looks like a print, though, is the red tile featuring Batman himself atop one of the skyscrapers in the background. You’ll also spot stickered grey tiles of the Dynamic Duo in the Batcave and Alfred in Wayne Manor.

LEGO Batman 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City minifigures

Given this is a microscale set, the selection of minifigures in 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City is actually pretty generous (at least compared to similar models). You get four brand new and exclusive characters, each based on their appearances in Batman: The Animated Series for the first time, including: Batman, Joker, Harley Quinn and Catwoman.

The Dark Knight looks to have dual-moulded legs, though reuses the one-size-fits-all cowl rather than something more specifically inspired by the design of the animated show, while Harley Quinn has a white face print on a red head – something that has us slightly worried about the print quality. (White typically looks pink when printed on red.) Top marks for Joker’s face print, though.

76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City will be available to buy from LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores from April 1, 2024 for LEGO Insiders (and April 4 for everyone else) for £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
