LEGO Marvel 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle review

LEGO Marvel 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle is as divided as Iron Man and Captain America, splitting focus and the overall quality.

LEGO Marvel finally returns to Captain America: Civil War in 2025 with 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle, following up 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle and 76067 Tanker Truck Takedown, but missing key minifigures and focusing on too much to make any one part excel. There are some improvements in the
£89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 set but on the whole it’s a disappointing evolution of the LEGO Captain America: Civil War range.

While the designers continue to find the balance between play and display in LEGO Marvel, 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle is a step backwards compared to 76291 The Avengers Assemble: Age of Ultron and even the reappearance of the Winter Soldier isn’t enough to save this model from itself.

Divided we fall

While the designer’s efforts to recreate the climactic airport battle scene from Captain America: Civil War in a display-worthy model should be commended, 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle is a far from perfect set and doesn’t perform as well once you look beyond the box art.

The model continues the recent range of battle-based LEGO Marvel builds recreating iconic moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, turning to the third Captain America film where teams of heroes fought one another at the Leipzig-Halle Airport. The last take on this set focused solely on play with many functions, such as a Quinjet and a minifigure-proportioned Giant-Man model.

76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle shakes up the formula of its predecessor by including a sizeable base on which to display the set’s components and minifigures, which consequently impacts the size and scale of its scene-specific models. That’s alongside a split focus on making the model displayable and playable at once. Thanks to the massive Giant-Man figure – now to scale with the recent LEGO Marvel buildable figure models – the Quinjet and airport are too small and ultimately feel incomplete.

Admittedly, the Quinjet is an enjoyable build and it’s hard not to appreciate how it has been designed to fit on 76269 Avengers Tower, but it’s still a disappointingly-sized build compared to the one in 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle. Without a direct comparison, this is a small but functional build which seems to have been scaled down to blend in well with the rest of the set.

The airport backdrop suffers much more from the split focus with a tiny control tower, a tease of the terminal with no space to put minifigures inside for the battle between Spider-Man, Falcon and Bucky, and an exploding barrel function that is much too forgettable in a set such as this. Yes, filling in the scene with Giant-Man, the eight minifigures and the Quinjet helps with the appearance but at that point, the airport backdrop is almost completely obscured and serves no purpose beyond posing minifigures while taking up a not-insignificant portion of the piece count and budget.

Either the focus should have been kept on Giant-Man and the Quinjet or the opportunity should have been taken to include enough space for the terminal fight behind the build or expanding the control tower as it was in the previous set. As it stands, the model looks decent on display until you take a closer look, which you’re encouraged to do thanks to the inclusion of a play feature. For sets such as these, you might expect the minifigures to pick up the slack, but one minifigure is a notable downgrade.

Bad Bucky

76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle‘s eight minifigures combine the cast of both previous Civil War sets, dropping some unnecessary inclusions for an enjoyable line-up. That’s not to say there aren’t odd exclusions though. Hawkeye, Vision and War Machine (not naming Ant-Man since Giant-Man is a big figure) are all absent when the designers were so close to filling out the two teams in a single set. That would have brought the total up to 11 minifigures though, which for the price of this set seems unlikely.

Still, we’re only treated to eight minifigures in this set and all have an adequate level of detail with some annoyingly overused legs for Black Widow, Falcon and Winter Soldier. Of these eight minifigures, the inclusion of another Winter Soldier minifigure is the most exciting in concept but in practice, you might mistake him for someone other than Bucky Barnes.

The Winter Soldier minifigure in 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle is disappointing thanks to the lack of crucial printing on the metal arm – something that has been present in every other minifigure of this character. Even excluding that, the printing on his face has ginger or at best light brown stubble, contrasting strongly with the black hair, which should be dark brown too.

Seeing these exclusions and errors would have been understandable for the first Winter Soldier minifigure, but not so much for the fifth when every other entry has fixed or included such crucial aspects of the design. It’s certainly the lowest point in an otherwise decent selection of minifigures and consequently brings the overall quality down.

Giant-Minifigure out, Giant-Man in

Rounding out the characters in 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle is Giant-Man. This would have been a more effective inclusion had 76256 Ant-Man Construction Figure not been released in 2023, though that set is retiring at the end of 2024. Despite the obvious similarities, this is still a stellar buildable figure with joints everywhere you’d expect and more.

The posing possibilities with this new Giant-Man figure make it an excellent addition to 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle but there will be some who prefer the minifigure-proportioned Giant-Man from 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle over this more realistic take.

Admittedly, veering away from the big minifigure was a smart move from the designers as this massive figure really adds to the scene. The variety of poses you can recreate is well worth it compared to the novelty of a big minifigure build. Giant-Man’s figure also features a slot to have a minifigure swooping around his head, adding further to its dynamic nature compared to a big minifigure build.

It’s arguably the best part of 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle, which only serves to highlight the problems with the rest of the model. The focus of the 2025 Marvel set is simply split too far to have any single aspect be any more than acceptable, which isn’t helped by the majorly disappointing Winter Soldier minifigure. For £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 with 736 pieces, it might be best to wait for a sale on this one.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
