LEGO Ideas ‘80s challenge fan vote relaunched following judging error

The relaunched LEGO Ideas ‘80s challenge fan vote is now live, with one entry swapped for an alternative following a judging error.

The first of two fan votes to find future LEGO Ideas sets commenced last week, but the Ideas team pulled the plug after realising they’d chosen two projects from the same builder, conflicting with the challenge’s rules. Delusion Brick’s Karate Kid submission has subsequently made way for ModularManiac’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

“We can only apologise to the incredible creators behind these submissions for needing to resolve an issue on our side,” the LEGO Ideas team said in a blog post. “And of course, to our community, a heartfelt apology and thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenge. We will be doing our best to promote this fan vote a little more over the next week, to ensure we get as many votes as possible.”

Voting is now underway once again for the refreshed list of five builds, which also includes concepts inspired by E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Goonies, Beetlejuice and Gremlins. The winning entry will be transformed into an official LEGO set sold around the world. But it won’t be the only LEGO Ideas ‘80s model: a second fan vote will also be held later this year to find another future set.

The first fan vote was originally planned to end on May 3, and the LEGO Ideas team has not communicated any changes on that front, so you may only have until this Friday to cast your vote. The winning entry will be revealed on June 14. A date for the second fan vote has yet to be confirmed, but the team is planning to announce the winner on September 1.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
