LEGO Art 31211 Macaw Parrots launched January 1, 2024 and is available now for £44.99 / $59.99 / €49.99. You’ll find it at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores, as well as through third-party retailers.

— LEGO Art 31211 Macaw Parrots build —

LEGO Art 31211 Macaw Parrots is a build designed for two but is not too long that it would be dull to do it all yourself either. Each colourful bird is distinct enough from the other to make both builds engaging – although note that the pink is a longer build than the yellow, so bear that in mind if you want some true equal division of labour.

The most intricate part of the build is the delicate flowers on the branch for the yellow bird, with the main appeal of 31211 Macaw Parrots being the simplistic style. Colour blocking is used to create the illusion of depth in an almost completely flat build. The vibrant colours make up for the lack of apparent detail. This LEGO Art set is not meant to be a faithful recreation of every detail of a macaw. Instead, it works as an artistic representation of the birds, catching the eye from afar through its vibrancy.

That’s not to say there are no details to enjoy. The use of green on the yellow bird works like shading, working best when viewed from far away to add more depth to the 2D-style bird around the wing and tail. Both birds share the same colour beak and eye, offering enough uniformity to bind the two together.

The contrast between the pink and green feathers of the second bird in flight is particularly striking, drawing the eye over the its yellow counterpart. The unified colour palette means both birds can easily work side by side but they’re also both impressive enough to work separately, if you wanted to spread them across separate rooms or walls, for example.

All in all, 31211 Macaw Parrots ticks a lot of boxes and continue the LEGO Art theme’s trend of bringing something brand new to the table with every new set. Where previous sets have recreated iconic artworks or offered the idea of customisation, 31211 Macaw Parrots brings a style that’s totally of its own. Rather than using LEGO bricks to make a 2D image 3D, this set brings a 3D subject (the birds) into a 2D style that is truly impressive when you finally see it hanging on the wall.

— LEGO Art 31211 Macaw Parrots price —

31211 Macaw Parrots retails for a very reasonable £44.99 / $59.99 / €49.99. Considering you get two pretty sizable birds to display on your wall, boasting a unique style all of their own, that’s a very good price. The set benefits from being so thin, not requiring a lot of pieces to make for a really impressive display – meaning you get a lot of bang for your buck.

If all you’re looking for is a brick-built rendition of natural creatures, another set that should be on your radar is 21342 The Insect Collection. Where 31211 Macaw Parrots is an artistic representation of the birds rather than a detailed one, 21342 The Insect Collection packs in every minute characteristic of the bugs with faithful attention to detail.

However, if it’s specifically a LEGO Art set you’re in the market for, then 31210 Modern Art is another impressive addition to the theme that doesn’t get enough attention. With the ability to tweak the design as you please, it’s a truly versatile set that boasts a much more engaging build process than 31211 Macaw Parrots.
