The LEGO Group to boast most of the highest-grossing media franchises

With the announcement of LEGO Pokémon, the LEGO Group will partner with most of the highest-grossing media franchises starting next year.

There’s no doubt that the announcement of LEGO Pokémon earlier this week demonstrates a monumental move by the LEGO Group to partner with easily the biggest media franchise in the world. Looking at the rest of the list though, it’s clear that the LEGO Group has a major leg up on the competition.

Of the 10 highest-grossing media franchises, the LEGO Group is partnered up with most of the brands including Pokémon as of next year, Star Wars as a long-time collaborator and the various aspects of Disney. There are still a few partnerships missing from the LEGO Group’s current portfolio, though.

Media franchiseEstimated total revenueIn the current LEGO portfolio?
Pokémon$98.9 billionComing in 2026
Mickey Mouse & Friends$61.2 billionYes
Winnie the Pooh$48.8 billionYes
Star Wars$46.7 billionYes
Disney Princess$45.4 billionYes
Anpanman$38.4 billionNo
Barbie$36.3 billionNo
Harry Potter$34.7 billionYes
Marvel Cinematic Universe$33.8 billionYes
Hello Kitty$32.8 billionNo

That’s still seven of the 10 highest-grossing media franchises in the current LEGO portfolio, leaving just Barbie, Anpanman and Hello Kitty out of the LEGO Group’s grasp right now.

Barbie is owned by rival toy brand Mattel and might be a pick for their upcoming construction toys. Anpanman is most popular in Japan and may not have the worldwide reach the LEGO Group is looking for, while Hello Kitty has been proposed for a LEGO set by fans previously but has not yet been given the green light.

With the addition of LEGO Pokémon starting next year, this is an impressive selection of partnerships and we can only hope that Pokémon is given as much or more attention than Harry Potter, Marvel, Star Wars and Disney by the LEGO designers in 2026.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
