LEGO Chinese Traditional Festival 2024 sets offer second chance

With returning minifigures and more, the 2024 LEGO Chinese Traditional Festival sets offer a second chance to pick up the first models – sort of.

It’s not just a family of returning minifigures that reference the first wave of builds in the 2024 LEGO Chinese Traditional Festival models. The latest range of LEGO models based on the annual festivities has been fully revealed on the official online store. However, you don’t need to spot the minor details to see that there are a few key similarities between the three new sets and the original models.

Not including the various animal builds for the years’ zodiac signs beforehand, 2019 saw the debut of the LEGO Chinese Traditional Festivals sets and they have been a mainstay ever since.

The family in 2019’s 80101 Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner are confirmed to be returning in 80113 Family Reunion Celebration, but this appears to be just the start of the similarities – coincidental or not. It’s worth noting that some members of the family have made cameos in other LEGO Chinese Traditional Festival sets in the years since 2019 too.

Looking at the rest of the 2024 LEGO Chinese Traditional Festival models (and 40678 Festival Calendar), the decision to depict a giant dragon not only ties into the zodiac sign for 2024 but could be a callback to 80102 Dragon Dance and it’s dragon-centric model too.

40678 Festival Calendar marks the relatively rare appearance of a LEGO dragon boat, which just so happens to be a focus 80103 Dragon Boat Race. Considering that the 2019 LEGO Chinese Traditional Festivals sets weren’t available widely, this presents an opportunity for enthusiasts worldwide to catch up on the first sets – without remaking them entirely.

Looking at the LEGO Chinese Traditional Festival sets released in the years between 2019 and 2024, the similarities are more noticeable as the others have covered entirely new concepts or parts of the annual festivities without paying homage to the first Chinese Traditional Festival builds in the same way that the 2024 models do.

Those looking forward to another year of these unique LEGO sets can pick up all three of the sets outlined in this report, as well as 40673 Spring Festival Mickey Mouse from January 1, 2024.
