LEGO City Arctic and Deep Sea subthemes rumoured to return in 2023

Next year’s LEGO City line-up is rumoured to feature both Arctic and Deep Sea Explorers at the same time, potentially marking another shift in direction for the evergreen theme.

One of the LEGO Group’s core themes is shaking things up in 2023, under the purview of a new design lead in Senior Creative Director Simon Lucas (co-creator of NINJAGO and Monkie Kid). We’re already seeing some of that shift in the January wave, which reimagines the usual wave of emergency department sets through products like the Total Wipeout-inspired 60372 Police Training Academy.

It sounds like those changes will now extend further into 2023, as Instagram user awesome_brick2008 reports (via brick_clicker) that the next batch of LEGO City sets will mix together multiple subthemes within a single wave. In years past, the theme has typically focused on a single subtheme – such as Arctic in 2014 and 2018, and Deep Sea Explorers in 2015 and 2020 – among a wider assortment of more generic sets.

On those occasions, we’ve received anywhere between four and seven sets within a particular subtheme. But the latest list of rumoured LEGO City 2023 sets includes two products apiece from both Arctic and Deep Sea Explorers, suggesting the theme will now be diversifying to a greater extent than ever before.

Case in point: alongside the return of both those sub themes, this list also includes sets anchored around skiing, air travel and construction, along with the usual mix of generic city living builds. And one of those – 60380 Urban Center – contains the most pieces of any LEGO City set to date…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
