LEGO City’s harbour is getting smaller, but bigger too

LEGO City’s limited selection of harbour sets showcases an interesting evolution across the trio of docks, cranes and cargo ships.

While LEGO City is rife with police, firefighters and trains, the theme rarely touches on cargo ships and harbours, but it is this summer. 60422 Seaside Harbor with Cargo Ship is the latest take on LEGO City’s maritime transport industry and suffice it to say that it differs vastly from 2007’s 7994 LEGO City Harbour and 2011’s 4645 Harbor.

Smaller ships

One of the main inclusions in each set is the cargo ship and both the 2007 and 2011 ships have used a singular floating element for the base while 60422 Seaside Harbor with Cargo Ship opts for a brick-built hull instead.

They also happen to be shrinking as the 2007 ship measures 58cm long, the 2011 ship is over 40cm long and the 2024 ship is just 32cm from bow to stern.

Bigger piece counts

While the ships are shrinking, the piece count is growing, despite the volume of the contents getting somewhat smaller.

The 2007 ship includes 659 pieces though this was lessened for the 2011 harbour at 551 elements. The 2024 set doubles this with 1,226 pieces, though it has more than just a cargo area.

Expanding beyond cargo

Despite the lack of a truck, 2024’s 60422 Seaside Harbor with Cargo Ship goes beyond the cargo zone with the inclusion of a small beach, a pier and a combined store and seafood restaurant.

Harbours have proven to have one of the more interesting evolutions within LEGO City and you can pick up the third take on the area as part of the theme’s summer 2024 selection in less than one week from the time of writing. Note that the US is receiving some of the new sets two months later than the UK and Europe, including 60422 Seaside Harbor with Cargo Ship.

Given both the ship & jetty in the new set are brick built rather than the moulded hulls & baseplates of the older sets it’s no surprise the part count has increased

Yeah I think I prefer the new one overall, but the size of the ship was a bit unexpected given how huge ships have been before. I suppose it’s kept the price down at least!

what this set needs is either a truck of some kind or train tracks with a wagon which would make it alot better for fans of Lego trains
