LEGO comments on misleading box art for 75345 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack

After disgruntled comments from within the LEGO Star Wars community, the LEGO Group has responded to criticism of the box art for 75345 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack.

Confusion began when the box art for 75345 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack was made public, showing the rangefinder attached to the lower of the two notches on the side of the Clone Trooper’s helmet. This wouldn’t actually be possible, seeing as the minifigures in the box use the same helmet style as the Clone Troopers in 75337 AT-TE Walker, meaning the rangefinder therefore attaches to the other hole.

As this is the first time that a rangefinder has been specifically advertised as attaching to one of the new helmets, LEGO Star Wars fans criticised the misleading render on the box, as it presents quite a different image from what’s inside. Now, the LEGO Group has responded to these critiques in a public statement.

“Creating new sets involves a number of different teams working together in parallel, and unfortunately in this case the printed box art for 75345 features a computer render of a Phase 2 Clone Trooper helmet that doesn’t reflect the final finished physical element and positioning of the range finder on the figure,” said Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Creative Lead for LEGO Star Wars. “In the final design of the physical helmet element, the visor dictates where holes for extra attachments need to be placed for them to sit. This is slightly higher than the position where the range finder is on the render found on the 75345 box.”

Ultimately, this confirms once and for all that the render does sit lower and that the render for the box was misleading. This is only exacerbated by the fact that the lifestyle images for the pack conceal the precise placement of the rangefinder, making it even harder to see the true position before buying.

This isn’t the first time that such printing has proven to be misleading. While it makes sense that these issues seem to be done to a company as large as the LEGO Group having a lot of moving parts between teams, hopefully this acknowledgement from the LEGO Group will reduce instances of it happening in the future, now that they’re aware of the confusion it caused within the community.

This is a dumb issue. Is someone NOT buying this set because of the position of the range finder on the box? REALLY? No.

No. But die hard Star Wars Lego fans are buying it specifically because it has a new figure, only to find out it doesn’t.

you’d think “die hard” Star Wars Lego fans were smart enough to do the minimal amount of research into the product they’re buying, no?

The ‘Statement’ doesn’t even attempt to explain why they keep making errors with box art though, just appears that errors spring out of the ether and its to be expected.
