LEGO’s new Haunted Mansion is more than just a Monster Fighters re-run

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31167 Haunted Mansion offers something new and clever in a very familiar-looking package.

But where there are clear signs of inspiration to be found here, 2025’s Creator 3-in-1 set very much sets out its own creative path.

LEGO Creator 3 in 1 31167 Haunted Mansion review 1 1024x683

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31167 Haunted Mansion is coloured and styled in a strikingly similar way to Monster Fighters 10228 Haunted House, so much so that it could derail this new set’s LEGO experience – with less than half as many pieces and with the added creative design challenge of needing the parts to also work for two alt-builds, any direct comparison would not come out in favour of 31167.

Yet, thankfully, it’s immediately apparent that 31167 Haunted Mansion is its own thing, with those same colours and same design styles serving as a neat tribute to the gigantic, classic 10228, working just as nicely as a spooky combination here in 2025, but very much across a completely different model.

LEGO Creator 3 in 1 31167 Haunted Mansion review 4 1024x683

With far fewer pieces (736 compared to 2,064), 31167 Haunted Mansion is a much smaller, more compact haunted house (indeed, their sizes are so different that the names are probably the wrong way around – 10228 is a mansion, 31167 is a house), and is built in such a clever way so as to fully maximise each one of the 736 pieces included for a quite wonderful 2-in-1 effect.

The set is built with two display/play options available – opened and closed. When opened the front of the house serves as a detailed, sizeable exterior, complete with a sizeable front porch, steps, a little graveyard and a haunted tree. There’s also a large gate at the front of the property to ward off curious passers-by. The mood of the house is dark and gloomy, with the windows boarded up and gothic styling across its two floors and tall, black roofs. There is an atmosphere to the outside of this set and it is perfectly haunted.

Whilst in this open mode the back offers a look inside, with several small rooms across both floors containing some spooky details – a ticking clock, an organ, and a hidden ghost revealed via a clever spinning function built into the wall. There isn’t a great deal of floor space here, but there’s plenty of hands-on fun that nicely matches what is established on the outside of the model.

The other mode to 31167 is closed, whereby the sides fold around and lock together. This transforms the appearance and shape of the house from all angles as it comes together to be a fully-enclosed model. Whilst this more clearly highlights the compact nature of the set, it’s a far better effect than you may otherwise expect, primarily for design considerations such as ensuring the roof at the back and the spacing between each window lines up perfectly so as to effortlessly blend together.

31167 Haunted Mansion is less than half the size of the set it pays tribute to and knowingly references in appearance. Yet it is a smart build, designed to play, display and function as its own thing, and it is all the better for it. The end result is a haunted house that looks great, offers that hit of nostalgia and modernises the play experience for 2025, all in a smaller, more display-friendly size.
