LEGO delays planned retirement of five Architecture sets

The LEGO Group has postponed the planned retirement of five Architecture sets, which means only two models in the current portfolio will leave shelves within the next two years.

In a sign of the times for LEGO Architecture – a once fairly prolific theme that has since been relegated to only one or two new releases per year – just one set is retiring this year, while the list of products departing in 2023 has now shrunk from six to one. 21051 Tokyo is the skyline set on the way out by the end of 2022, while 21054 The White House is currently scheduled to retire by December 31, 2023.

21028 New York City, 21034 London, 21042 Statue of Liberty, 21044 Paris and 21056 Taj Mahal – all originally planned for retirement next year – will now hang around until the end of 2024, according to Brick Fanatics’ sources. That’s an incredibly long shelf life for 21028 New York City in particular, which has been available since 2016. It’s clearly selling very well for the LEGO Group.

This change also speaks to the tiny turnover required for LEGO Architecture, and suggests that the theme’s current release pattern will continue into 2023 – and possibly into 2024, too. No LEGO Architecture sets are rumoured for next year at the moment, so we could even be looking at a return to the theme’s 2021 release schedule, which skipped the January window altogether.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
