LEGO designer hints at 2023 Ideas sets, teases unrevealed model

A LEGO Ideas designer has hinted at three new sets coming in 2023, and teased an unrevealed model – suggesting we’ll see at least one project approved in the second 2022 review.

Based on previous years, the results of the second 2022 review – which includes 51 projects, all vying for a spot in the LEGO Ideas production line – will be announced in February 2023. But while sets typically take anywhere up to a year and a half to arrive on shelves after getting the green light, at least one project from this review seems likely to be launching within the same calendar year.

That’s because James May, who moved to the LEGO Ideas design team in 2022, has teased four sets he’s been working on for 2023 over on Twitter. On the shortlist are BTS – Dynamite, Hocus Pocus – The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage, Polaroid OneStep SX-70 and a mystery set that’s yet to be announced. Given all LEGO Ideas sets are based on user-generated submissions approved during review periods, that only leads us to a single conclusion: at least one project will get the green light in the next review.

What that could be is a mystery at this stage, but there’s plenty to choose from. Some will obviously not make the cut – Viking Village, The Great Wave off Kanagawa – but we can see a few in with a genuine chance of getting the nod. And it’s also not to say that only one project will pass in this review: a record four sets have come out of the first 2022 review, and the LEGO Ideas team could easily continue that current trajectory with the second review.

For now, the next LEGO Ideas set is rumoured to be 21338 A-Frame Cabin, based on a design by Andrea Lattanzio. Here’s a look at the LEGO Ideas 2023 slate based on current rumours (not including the sets teased by May).

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

21340 is the Hocus Pocus set, not Tales from the Space Age
