LEGO Disney Snow White is the latest casualty of movie delays

The SAG-AFTRA strikes from 2023 placed delays on a number of movies and TV shows, including the live-action Snow White, leaving the associated LEGO sets out in the cold.

You might think that the upcoming LEGO Disney 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage seems a little random. It’s clearly based on the animated film from 1937 but wasn’t released as part of Disney 100 last year, where the 100-year-old company took the opportunity to celebrate some of its most popular past titles. It’s also not quite on time for riding the live-action wave, with the movie starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot coming out on March 21 – but in 2025.

However, it’s worth noting that Snow White was originally meant to come out on March 22, 2024. This would have paired perfectly with 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage‘s release date of March 1.

This wouldn’t be the first time that these Hollywood delays have impacted the release schedules of sets. The LEGO Group plans out when its sets will launch several months and sometimes even years in advance, so it’s not always easy for them to adapt to last-minute changes as we’ve seen over the last 12 months. Indeed, 76232 The Hoopty came out on October 1, 2023, a full month ahead of the film’s release date. The film was delayed from July of the same year and the original intention of the set could have been intended to come after fans had already seen the ship itself in action.

Sometimes, however, the LEGO Group can adapt on the fly. Indeed, two rumoured LEGO Marvel sets, 76292 Captain America vs Red Hulk Battle and 76296 Captain America Buildable Figure, are believed to have been delayed, in line with the fact that the movie they’re supposedly based on, Captain America: Brave New World, has been pushed back to 2025.

LEGO Icons 10327 Dune Ornithopter was also originally rumoured to be coming out in November, 2023, only to actually release on February 1, 2024, bringing it closer to the premiere of Dune: Part 2 on March 1, 2024.

Returning to 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage, the set isn’t so closely hooked to the live-action film that fans will overlook the LEGO Disney model. The design of the minifigures is more closely paralleled to the original animated film and the details of the set are impressive enough to warrant a purchase, even if there was no film on the way.

Nonetheless, the widespread delays hitting Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney may well be causing some at the LEGO Group to scratch their heads over when is best to launch associated LEGO sets. After all, one of the most infamous delays delays from the past, the two-year wait for Minions: The Rise of Gru, saw one LEGO Minions model from the wave actually retire before the film ever made it into cinemas. Ultimately, however, we’d hope that builds are impressive enough to stand alone, even if not released directly alongside the films and TV shows that inspired them.
