Star Wars series delays rumoured amid ongoing strikes, including Skeleton Crew

Reports are emerging that Disney and Lucasfilm are delaying future Star Wars TV series as a result of the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, and the first casualty will be Skeleton Crew.

While we’re still waiting on an official premiere date for the Jon Watts-helmed series – which stars Jude Law and a cast of relatively unknown child actors – it’s long been pencilled in for a 2023 debut. Bespin Bulletin now claims that Disney has pushed Star Wars: Skeleton Crew back to 2024, with one source reporting that the show could potentially be delayed all the way up to November next year.

That could mean a rocky start to the new year for the LEGO Star Wars team, given a ship inspired by the live-action series is rumoured to be headlining the January 2024 wave. At 1,325 pieces for €139.99, it’s due to be the heftiest winter wave flagship set for years (if rumours are true) – but if there’s no series to which the LEGO Group’s marketing department can hook it, gambling on a bigger model could prove to be a risky move.

Other Star Wars shows are said to be suffering as a result of the strikes too, which isn’t all too surprising given recent word of delays to Marvel’s streaming line-up. Bespin Bulletin expects the high-republic era series The Acolyte – scheduled to drop in 2024 – to experience some kind of delay, but it should be ‘nowhere near as significant’ as the worst-case scenario for Skeleton Crew.

Andor’s second season, meanwhile, was originally targeting a release window of August 2024 – but with production on hold until the strikes are over, it may end up being pushed back to 2025. Delays to those shows may be easier for the LEGO Group to accommodate (at least if Disney and Lucasfilm are giving their merchandising partners ample notice), if any tie-in material is in the works.

Whether the company will end up shifting around its January 2024 wave will obviously depend first on whether it really does have a Skeleton Crew set ready to go, and second on the extent of any delays to the streaming show. It’s worth remembering that these are all just rumours for now, but in the context of other confirmed and reported delays to shows and movies – including the second instalment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation – they don’t seem too extraordinary.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
