The LEGO Group announces carbon-neutral factory in the US

The LEGO Group has today announced that it will be constructing a new carbon-neutral factory to be located in Virginia, USA.

A major new US-based building project has been announced by the LEGO Group today, with a carbon-neutral run factory set to open in 2025. The location of the site will be in Chesterfield County, Virginia, with the factory boasting a solar park to create enough energy to power the facility.

In addition, the $1 billion project is intended to create more than 1,760 jobs in the area and once completed the building will be 1.7 million square feet. The new factory joins another such project being constructed in Vietnam and follows the expansion of similar facilities in Europe and China.

Niels B. Christiansen, CEO, the LEGO Group said, ‘This is an exciting step for the LEGO Group. More and more families are falling in love with LEGO building and we are looking forward to making LEGO bricks in the US, one of our largest markets.’ He went on to say, ‘The location in Virginia allows us to build a solar park which supports our sustainability ambitions and provides easy links to country-wide transportation networks. We are also looking forward to creating fantastic employment opportunities for the people of Virginia.’

The push to integrate renewable energy into its factories is all part of the LEGO Group’s push to reduce its carbon emissions by 37% by 2032. The company is also starting to transition away from plastic packaging in its sets, replacing them with more environmentally-friendly paper bags, as well as instruction manuals that are presumably printed with less ink.
