LEGO Harry Potter fans call for ‘all or nothing’ on transparent bricks in 76414 Expecto Patronum

LEGO Harry Potter fans are divided over the mixed elements used to create 76414 Expecto Patronum.

Thanks to an early look via JP Spielwaren, we’ve got our first look at LEGO Harry Potter 76414 Expecto Patronum. It can depict two animals, both representations of two characters’ Patronus, a stag and a wolf. Within the world of Harry Potter, Patronuses are semi-corporeal manifestations of happy thoughts, used to drive away the depressing, decaying presence of Dementors.

As in the picture above, the cinematic Patronus were virtually see-through, made out of transparent, pale blue essence, almost like the Hogwarts’ ghosts. By comparison, the brick-built stag and wolf are not entirely transparent, despite including some transparent elements on the head, chest, and legs of the deer. The image of the wolf is smaller but appears to include even fewer transparent elements. And this has not gone down well with a few eagle-eyed fans of the theme over on Reddit.

“The few trans-turquoise pieces kinda look out of place, I think there should either be much more transparent pieces or go fully solid blue,” wrote one Reddit user in one of the most upvoted comments on the set’s post. Indeed, the difference in colour between the transparent and solid-coloured pieces is somewhat jarring.

As other commenters point out, having a set built entirely out of transparent pieces would have pushed this 754-piece well beyond its current €69.99 price tag and into a realm that few would likely buy. Nonetheless, it feels like the LEGO Group perhaps should have stuck to one colour throughout, with the resulting mix creating an almost mechanical look to the stag.

Another Redditor described it as a ‘futuristic robot’, writing: “That transparent piece looks like a cockpit and should have a minifigure inside”. While others are defending the colour choice, it would have made for a more seamless appearance if the transparent elements were a closer colour match, or perhaps just a few more were included strategically.
