LEGO Harry Potter’s Gringotts sets have evolved in a huge way

LEGO Harry Potter’s Gringotts models have only improved with time, but the bank has undergone an extensive transformation over two decades.

76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank – Collectors’ Edition is undoubtedly the biggest Gringotts build ever released. However, it’s far different from any other version of the LEGO bank ever designed.

From the disappearance of the underground cart system and its sudden revival to the introduction of the Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon, here’s how the LEGO Group’s Gringotts models have evolved up to 2023’s 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank – Collectors’ Edition.

4714 Gringotts Bank

Year: 2002 Pieces: 250 Price: £24.99 / $29.99

lego

The first LEGO Harry Potter Gringotts set released over 20 years ago in the form of 41714 Gringott’s Bank.

This model has no attempt at the building’s iconic exterior, focusing on the underground transportation system instead. It also includes a vault, desk and a small section of the ground-level interior.

10217 Diagon Alley

Year: 2011 Pieces: 2,025 Price: £132.99 / $149.99 / €149.99

Nearly a decade after 4714 Gringotts Bank 10217 Diagon Alley includes the building’s exterior, not quite matching what is featured in later sets.

The underground cart system is completely missing in the interior, including a desk, a vault and a couple of paintings. Unfortunately, the carts would remain missing for another decade. However, it is able to enclose, matching the shape of the fictional bank more.

40289 Diagon Alley

Year: 2018 Pieces: 374 Price: Gift-with-purchase

In 40289 Diagon Alley, Gringotts is represented at a much smaller scale. Angled bricks held by clips help capture the look of the slanted exterior columns.

It’s one of the few buildings in the set to feature an interior, with six bricks depicting two of the desks. The carts are missing and there are no vaults to be seen, but that’s understandable at this scale.

76390 LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar

Year: 2021 Pieces: 274 Price: £24.99 / $39.99 / €29.99

The first of two LEGO Harry Potter advent calendar appearances for Gringotts focuses entirely on the interior.

2021’s advent calendar includes the most iconic parts of the interior with a cart, a vault and a desk. Unfortunately, there’s nowhere in set to place them apart from specific spots on the game board.

76404 LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar

Year: 2022 Pieces: 334 Price: £29.99 / $44.99 / €34.99

2022’s advent calendar also opted for a LEGO Gringotts, returning to microscale, though even smaller than in 40289 Diagon Alley.

There’s no room for an interior here, but it is the first set to include the Ukrainian Ironbelly atop the bank.

76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank – Collectors’ Edition

Year: 2023 Pieces: 4,803 Price: £369.99 / $429.99 / €429.99

The Ukrainian Ironbelly returns in the huge 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank – Collectors’ Edition, finally offering a complete version of the bank complete with interior, exterior, dragon and an underground cart system.

Using nearly 5,000 pieces, 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank – Collectors’ Edition is the culmination of two decades of LEGO Gringotts models, taking new features and combining them into easily the best depiction of the bank in bricks to date.

It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
