LEGO Horizon Adventures soundtrack creator says it unlocked her ‘inner child’

As a fan of both Horizon and LEGO, writing the soundtrack for LEGO Horizon Adventures was a dream come true for American singer-songwriter and streamer mxmtoon.

The song made to accompany LEGO Horizon Adventures has just been released, titled post-post apocalyptic dance party and created by mxmtoon as announced by her post on X. She has dug deeper into the origins of the song in an interview with Rolling Stone, highlighting how she suspected even before she was told that the upcoming game (kept closely under wraps) had something to do with LEGO.

“I remember reading the brief and being like, ‘This sounds a lot like Horizon Zero Dawn, but weirdly, there’s some LEGO terminology in here,'” she told the magazine. “[I thought], ‘that’s cool if they ended up doing that’ – then it ended up being exactly what I had anticipated!”

Listening to the song, it shares a similar energy and frenetic pace as The LEGO Movie’s Everything Is Awesome – and that’s not the first time it’s happened in mxmtoon’s repertoire. Being a LEGO fan herself, she professes her love for the LEGO movies and their music.

“I have a song from my 2022 record, coming of age, that was directly inspired [by] how much I love, Everything Is Awesome from The LEGO Movie,” she remembered. “I am just a fan, in the truest sense. When they came to me and they were giving me these inspiration references, they [gave] the LEGO tracks from The LEGO Movie [as] a good reference point. I was like, ‘Done. So easy.'”

mxmtoon is excited to play LEGO Horizon Adventures herself, although she hasn’t had the chance yet. She hopes that turning a video game franchise into its own LEGO-styled game becomes more common practice in the world of gaming.

“It’s interesting to take a game that’s so known for its own mechanic system, and then introduce it into a [new] format,” the musician mused. “LEGO has its own world, its own system, and the way that it functions, the people explode into pieces when they die.

“There are so many things that are fun, but I think that because there is such a solid, consistent language that’s present in the video games, it’s fun to think about just taking a story and characters that people love already and just formatting them in this other situation.

“At the end of the day, good stories are good stories, and trying to move them into a different format, especially in a LEGO world, is still exciting. I’m sure that this is the beginning of something that will continue to happen, but it’s really cool that I got to be a part of it for its first iteration.”

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
