Will 21366 Floating Sea Otters sink or swim in LEGO Ideas? Here’s our honest review of the fan-designed bundle of cuteness.
Originally created by fan designer Maximilian Lambrecht, LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters doubles up on the furry creatures in the final version inspired by his work. Retailing at £99.99 / $119.99 / €109.99, the parent-pup duo floats on a brick-built watery base, decorated by scraps of vegetation and rock in line with the real-life animal’s habitat. 21366 Floating Sea Otters joins a relatively long line of realistic-looking LEGO animals. Even within the LEGO Ideas theme, we’ve had 21349 Tuxedo Cat and 21365 Orange Cat, but this model feels closer to some of the LEGO Icons examples, such as 10331 Kingfisher. Despite sticking closer to the look of the actual animal than the original fan design from Maximilian, the articulated mouth and limbs keep a welcome amount of expressiveness in the face that warms the heart to look at.
The addition of the brick-built otter pup takes 21366 Floating Sea Otters to an even greater level, however, leaning into what every good LEGO set needs: a story. Despite being clearly a display-focused build with few interactive options, the pup’s articulation – with three rotating sections in the body allowing you to lie it down in different ways – still allows for some personalisation of the build.

You can even choose to display the set without the pup entirely, swapping it out for a clam shell that’s been smashed open. The flexible way that the mother’s front legs are connected with ball joints also enables a surprising amount of poses, from rubbing her own cheeks to holding the shell or her young pup.

All of these display possibilities manage to bring the otherwise entirely static set to life. While there might have been a worry that the less cartoonish style, when compared to the original fan design, might have lost 21366 Floating Sea Otters some personality, the exact opposite is true. The playful, heartwarming nature of the actual animal has been faithfully recreated here with genuine authenticity.
The build itself is fairly simple in terms of techniques, lending itself well to first-time builders, yet also proving that simplicity doesn’t negate ingenuity. There’s clever artistry hidden within basic techniques of layering plates, seen in the way that darker plates are used underneath the otter’s body, creating the illusion of half the animal being hidden under the water.
The green leaf elements are layered on top of one another in a way that makes them curve, forcing another illusion of waves lapping around the edge of the floating otter duo. The transparent blue elements lapping over the edge of the black display plate add to this organic feel, making 21366 Floating Sea Otters feel like a real slice of life from the sea’s surface.

All of those nifty visual tricks are achieved through easy build steps, meaning the set is simple enough for those without much LEGO experience (as the cuteness factor of 21366 Floating Sea Otters is sure to bring in some first-time builders) while still being clever enough to appeal to more experienced LEGO fans.
While the layering of the transparent plates might feel repetitive, it’s broken up with the more varied build-up of the fur. A mix of angled plates and bricks creates the semi-matted effect of wet otter fur perfectly, striking the right balance between smooth and textured without veering into the overly fussy look of 75371 Chewbacca, for example.
It may not be the most entrancing build experience out there, but it’s certainly enough to keep you engaged throughout – and the reward is a display model that we’d challenge anyone not to enjoy. The personality and life are simply overflowing in 21366 Floating Sea Otters, features that LEGO sets (being made up of plastic bricks) often struggle to capture.
All of that makes the LEGO Ideas set well worth the price tag of £99.99 / $119.99 / €109.99 if you’re after a delightful display piece to add to your collection. The real value of this set comes once fully built, so for those after a complex build or plenty of interactive features, it might not feel worth that money. 21366 Floating Sea Otters is designed to be built once and left alone – but its cuteness means it will be enjoyed for a long time after.
Our honest opinion: 21366 Floating Sea Otters makes realism the name of the game, but without abandoning any of the LEGO fun that makes it so darn cute.
