LEGO Ideas’ ’80s challenge’s rules are proving lenient

The rules for the new LEGO Ideas 80’s challenge are proving to be lenient, not counting the likes of LEGO Dimensions and now BrickHeadz as sets.

There’s a new LEGO Ideas challenge on the platform looking for entries based on intellectual properties to become a new LEGO Ideas set. The rules for the challenge specifically state that entries must use an IP that is included on the LEGO Ideas license checker and has not been represented by a current or previous set.

They go on to specifically name Back to the Future, Indiana Jones and Tron, covered in 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine, a full theme and 21314 TRON: Legacy respectively. As previously reported, LEGO Dimensions packs do not seem to count as sets for these rules, opening up a few properties for the challenge and recent entries into it have embraced this news.

It has now been discovered that even more properties could be eligible for the contest as BrickHeadz don’t appear to count as sets either.

Mommymoccer‘s Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers submission has been approved for the challenge but there has been a BrickHeadz pack based on the ’80s animated series previously – 40550 Chip & Dale. The set features the logo for the original series, though it was released near the 2022 movie to capitalise on it.

In reality, this should be nothing but good news for LEGO Ideas users hoping to win the challenge and become a future fan designer. Depending on the rules’ definition of sets, many more properties may be eligible for the contest. Excluding LEGO Dimensions as sets makes some sense since they both covered a vast number of ’80s IPs and are undeniably unique entries into the LEGO portfolio. LEGO BrickHeadz are more traditional sets.

Whatever you want to base your entry on, make sure to use the LEGO Ideas license checker first, (by starting to submit a project) that your chosen ’80s IP is allowed in the platform at all.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
