LEGO Ideas Jaws fan designer reveals painstaking process
The designer behind an upcoming LEGO Ideas set explained his painstaking design process that sent his submission to success.
While the LEGO Ideas set based on Jaws has now been confirmed to be on its way to becoming an official LEGO set, this isn’t the first time that Johnny Campbell has had a shark-themed set make it past 10,000 votes. When redesigning the build for its second attempt at LEGO Ideas, Johnny confirmed that he went back to the drawing board, entirely dismantling his original build, as reported in an interview with the Daily Jaws.
“I re-designed and rebuilt the Orca and the shark piece-by-piece, incorporating much more stable building techniques and refined my design as much as I could to make it as accurate as possible to the movie, using the LEGO elements which are currently available,” said Johnny. “I also included a small diorama build of the shark coming out of the water in that iconic scene.”
While this might have been a time-consuming process, requiring Johnny to watch the second half of the movie virtually frame by frame (although as a diehard fan, we imagine this wasn’t too much of a chore), he does believe that he paid off in the end result.
“I believe that the overall design is now much better than my previous iteration and as mentioned previously the building techniques I have used provide much more stability as required for official LEGO products,” the fan designer commented. “There is also a much higher level of detail. However, to be honest, the real reason is probably just because Jaws is so great!”
Johnny didn’t give away any clues about when we might expect to see the set, stating only that it could be by next summer, judging by other LEGO Ideas timelines. All we know for now is that it’s on its way, but it remains to be seen how close to the original design the official LEGO Ideas product stays.
