The newly-resurrected LEGO Indiana Jones theme is rumoured to be done ‘for now’, with no new sets said to be on the cards for 2024.
While we’ve already heard plenty of rumours on next year’s LEGO sets – and even seen our first 2024 products thanks to LEGO Animal Crossing – news of further LEGO Indiana Jones sets has yet to materialise. The whip-cracking, time-travelling adventurer returned to LEGO Store shelves this year ahead of the Dial of Destiny landing in cinemas, with a trio of sets based exclusively on Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
The LEGO Group shelved a fourth planned set hooked to The Temple of Doom at the last moment, while initial rumours of a wave of sets tied to the fifth instalment in the franchise never came to pass. In the end, Indy fans have had to be content with 77012 Fighter Plane Chase, 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb and 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol – but a faint sliver of hope remained that the theme might continue in 2024.
According to Instagram user tandnbricks, however, those hopes will be unfounded: in a recent Instagram Q&A, they claimed that ‘Indy is done for now’, suggesting no more sets will follow next year. That ‘for now’ hints that more sets could come one day, but perhaps only to the extent that the door would be open to the LEGO Group taking advantage of the licence once again.
The relatively poor performance of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the box office – the film reportedly resulted in a $100m loss for Disney – suggests the audience for the franchise is not what it once was, which may explain why the LEGO Group is potentially not interested in continuing the theme. The company rarely provides explanations for cancelling (or discontinuing) themes, though, so we may never learn the real reason for the theme’s stunted return.
That’s if this report pans out as expected, anyway – it is just a rumour at the moment, so we could still see LEGO Indiana Jones continue in 2024. We’ve heard nothing as of yet, and tandnbricks has previously proven to be a reliable source, but take it with a pinch of salt just in case.
