LEGO Japan reveals exclusive Animal Crossing packaging

The upcoming LEGO Animal Crossing sets will feature exclusive packaging in Japan, reflecting New Horizons’ status as the country’s best-selling game of all time.

While several LEGO sets feature language variants of their names – see the furore around ‘misprinted’ Dark Vador boxes – it’s very rare to see region-specific box art. But that’s exactly what the first batch of LEGO Animal Crossing sets will receive in Japan, where the game’s logo will be written out in Japanese script. LEGO Japan has revealed a first look at the unique packaging for the five sets and polybag that make up the launch wave.

As of November 2022, Animal Crossing: New Horizons had taken the crown for the best-selling game of all time in Japan (according to Game Data Library), shifting an incredible 10.45 million units since its release in 2020. The game’s enormous popularity in Japan is presumably the driving force behind the LEGO Group tailoring the packaging for its tie-in sets for that market.

While we don’t know for sure, it seems almost inevitable that these boxes will be available exclusively in Japan, so those of us based elsewhere will have to turn to secondary markets (or use it as an excuse to take a holiday) to get our hands on them. They’ll hit shelves in Japan on March 1, when the regular packaging goes on sale around the world. Check out the table below for a reminder of all six products in the initial assortment.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
