New LEGO Jurassic World 2024 set suggests a new sub-theme could be on the way

A first look at LEGO Jurassic World sets for 2024 suggests a new sub-theme might be on its way in the new year.

Thanks to an early listing from German retailer JB Spielwaren, we’ve got our first look at two LEGO Jurassic World sets, including one with a name that sets it apart from those that have come before: 76964 Dinosaur Fossils: T. rex Skull. Including a colon in a LEGO set name is nothing new (looking at you, 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage and 10316 The Lord of The Rings: Rivendell) but it could suggest a new direction for the LEGO Jurassic World theme.

Up until now, LEGO Jurassic World has focused primarily on play sets. The packaging is brightly coloured and clearly aimed towards younger builders and some adult fans were disappointed that 76961 Visitor Center: T. rex & Raptor Attack was a more open set designed for play, rather than a display-minded, contained model.

However, 76964 Dinosaur Fossils: T. rex Skull suggests that a new Dinosaur Fossils sub-theme could be on the way. Not only is the set name a change, but the set itself is quite a departure from the norm. A brick-built dinosaur skull sits on a LEGO stand, complete with an information plaque. Much like LEGO Star Wars and Marvel helmets, LEGO Star Wars midi-scale ships, and other display-focused sub-themes, this could certainly suggest that more dino fossils may follow, either in 2024 or in future years. There’s certainly enough dinos to create many more similar builds to 76964 Dinosaur Fossils: T. rex Skull, perhaps attracting archaeology fans as well as Jurassic Park/World lovers.

The 577-piece set is due to retail for a respectable €39.99 in Europe, but international prices are not yet confirmed at the time of writing.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
