LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red debuts updated rare minifigures

Updated versions of two rare minifigures have made their debut in the animated LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red special now on Disney+.

A new animated special arrived on Disney+ yesterday, with LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red now available for all subscribers to stream. Clocking in at just over 46 minutes, the mini movie follows Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they attempt to locate Black Widow’s missing father and battle a sinister cosmic foe.

A recent trailer for LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red revealed that the special is packed with deep cuts and references to LEGO history. These include nods to Hero Factory and BIONICLE, plus an appearance from the rare Mr. Gold minifigure spotted in one of The Collector’s display cases.

Speaking of the latter character, an updated version of The Collector make his debut in LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red, one that looks very different from his previous iteration. Only available at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 as a limited edition exclusive, The Collector minifigure has never appeared in any LEGO Marvel set to date and currently changes hands for over £700 on the secondary market.

The new version of the character seen in LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red loses his trademark white cloak, gains a two-tone hair piece and boasts new head, torso and leg printing. It’s not yet known if this iteration of The Collector will be included in any future LEGO Marvel sets, but diehard fans might not be that impressed with the cosmic villain’s updated streetwise look.

Also popping up in LEGO Marvel Avengers: Code Red is the Red Guardian, a minifigure of whom has only appeared in 77905 Taskmaster’s Ambush, a San Diego Comic-Con 2020 exclusive and limited LEGO.com release in the US. Black Widow’s father gains an updated torso print in the animated special, as well as his own unique helmet design, printed legs, tan hands replacing white and a one-piece shield instead of a brick-built version.

As with The Collector, there are no suggestions that the new version of the Red Guardian will be included in any upcoming LEGO Marvel sets, but at least those new designs now exist should the rare minifigures make a reappearance at some point.
