LEGO Technic Mighty Machines: The future of blind boxes?

LEGO Technic will debut the theme’s first blind box release this year, but does 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1 signal a new direction for such collectibles?

LEGO Technic’s recent summer 2026 reveals included 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1, eight different mini construction vehicles, all of which will be packaged in blind boxes. While we’ve seen collectible minifigures, characters and vehicle offerings before, such as Mixels, Super Mario, F1 and the current 71052 Series 29, this the first time the 18+ theme has tested out the format, an approach that’s left us with plenty of questions about possible similar future releases.

For starters, recent LEGO blind box launches have usually included scannable QR codes on their packaging, but will 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1 feature them too? The smart money would seem to suggest in the affirmative, but we won’t really know for sure until launch day when we can try using the Brick Search app to find out if that’s indeed the case.

Then there’s the price of the LEGO Technic collectibles, with each blind box retailing for £4.49 / $4.99 / €4.99, a slight increase on the likes of 71052 Series 2. It’s worth noting that the official listing does state that inside each box is a 44-piece vehicle, plus a collectible playing card with stats about the model on one side and a road graphic on the other, extra incentives that somewhat justify their cost.

The price of 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1 might even be an indicator that we’ll be receiving less of these builds than standard Collectible Minifigures or polybags per year and they won’t be taking up the slot of a new LEGO Minifigures series. The LEGO Technic mystery boxes do confirm that this is Series 1 of such vehicles, a hint that more may be on the way at some point, although that’s just speculation on our part for now.

It could also be argued that each 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1 creation does come with its own LEGO Technic moving function too, simple engineering features that give the models an extra level of play and additional potential desirability, both of which are reflected in the cost of what will still essentially be pocket money purchases.

That’s not to say that 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1 will appeal to all LEGO Technic fans though, with the upcoming collectibles clearly aimed at bringing a much younger audience into the theme, one that usually focuses on more adult-oriented sets.

If 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1 does ultimately prove to be a hit across the board, could we see more themes embrace a similar approach to blind-boxed collectibles? As we’re firmly in speculation territory here, there’s no reason why the likes of LEGO City, DC, Speed Champions and even Star Wars couldn’t go down the same route, offering up their own brick-built vehicles at some point.

We’ve seen licensed blind boxes before, in the shape of last year’s 71049 F1 Collectible Race Cars, so vehicle-based offerings from other IPs certainly wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility, especially given certain theme’s dedicated fanbases.

We’ll know much more about 42233 Mighty Machines Series 1 once the LEGO Technic collectibles launch on August 1, 2026, with each blind box priced at £4.49 / $4.99 / €4.99.

In the meantime, 71052 Series 29 is available now for £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 per blind box.
