LEGO Minas Tirith balances what Rivendell and Barad-dûr couldn’t

The LEGO Group has defined its modern The Lord of the Rings range through enormous flagship builds, but the latest stands out more than the rest for one key reason.

With 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr, and now 11377 The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith, the LEGO Group has taken three distinct approaches to scale, storytelling, and display.

10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire doesn’t feature here, as it takes a smaller-scale approach compared to the LEGO Group’s larger Lord of the Rings display sets. Even with over 2,000 pieces, it is still less than half the size of Barad-dûr, the smallest of the three sets that are covered here.

When it released in March 2023, 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell set the tone for the entire modern LEGO Middle-earth line. Though it doesn’t function as a traditional playset, it features enough minifigures and iconic landmarks, such as the gazebo where Arwen and Aragorn meet, and the table where the Council of Elrond gathers, to suggest play possibilities.

It allows for flexibility with minifigure placement, and they fit into it in a natural, cohesive scale with the build. In many ways, it feels like a large diorama. However, while it remains a beautiful build, it does not dominate a shelf in the same way as the later two sets.

When 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr released just over a year later, it shifted away from the calm, scenic focus that Rivendell had established, and instead prioritised vertical dominance.

This makes sense for the source material, as fear and overwhelming scale define Barad-dûr. And that is exactly what the build delivers, even though it uses over 500 fewer pieces than 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell. The wide base builds upward into the Eye of Sauron, which acts as a visual anchor and ensures the set dominates any shelf it sits on.

However, that exterior focus comes at a cost. The interior rooms stack vertically, and while each level offers variation, the experience feels more segmented than dynamic compared to Rivendell. 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr delivers stronger display impact than Rivendell, but scene setting becomes more difficult because the structure inevitably overpowers the interior storytelling.

Recently revealed 11377 The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith reshapes both approaches. It finds a way to combine 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell’s scenic minifigure posing with 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr’s visual dominance, but it does so by separating those two ideas into different scales.

The minifigure-scale interior supports posing and diorama-style storytelling, much like Rivendell. However, the microscale exterior delivers the visual impact needed to represent the city as a whole, like Barad-dûr.

By not forcing a single consistent scale, the LEGO Group creates a set that feels both minifigure-friendly and capable of acting as a centrepiece for an entire collection. This separation of scale keeps the build as engaging as Rivendell while still remaining display-oriented.

10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell relies on intricacy and 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr relies on height, but 11377 The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith combines both in a way that creates a different kind of visual weight. That shift makes Minas Tirith the most balanced of the three sets, not because it does everything equally well, but because it actively expands how a LEGO Lord of the Rings set can be experienced.

If you want to purchase 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, it is available now from LEGO.com for £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99. 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr is also available for £399.99 / $459.99 / €459.99, while 11377 The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith launches on June 1 for LEGO Insiders and June 4 for the wider public, priced at £579.99 / €649.99 / $649.99.
