LEGO Minifigures Series 29 spotlight: Boba Cup Fan

One of the most unusual minifigures in LEGO Minifigures Series 29 proves that there has to be balance and something for everyone in each series.

71052 Series 29 features 12 new minifigures to collect as of May 1, featuring everyone from the Bionicle Cosplayer to the Monster Hunter. There are several minifigures to add to your wishlist, but one that seems unlikely to be at the top of most fans’ priorities is the Boba Cup Fan. Beyond the inevitable head-swapping with Boba Fett and having a mascot to place outside of your Boba stalls and shops, this minifigure isn’t as instantly attractive for many enthusiasts.

It will certainly draw a crowd, though, even if it has fewer details than most of the 12 new minifigures. Since this is a classic series, the goal is to have a broad range of themes. Slice-of-life minifigures and costumed characters are a part of that balance. Brick Fanatics found out more about this balance and why 71052 Series 29 needed a minifigure like this in an interview featuring members of the LEGO Minifigures design team at LEGO Fan Media Days 2025.

“I don’t think there is any written formula to the balance,” shared Esa Nousiainen, Design Lead for LEGO Minifigures. “One of our guiding principles is offering something for everyone, and that’s how we tried to do it.”

In 71052 Series 29, that balance meant a Boba Cup fan with simpler printing and more undecorated parts rather than another sworld-wielding minifigure. The Boba Cup Fan is also an example of how Series 29 compensates for other areas of the range.

“Sometimes there’s a line-up that has maybe more for one segment, and the next line-up might compensate for another parameter,” added Graphic Designer Tore Magelund Harmark-Alexandersen.

“For example, there’s no historical knight in this series. It’s more about inclusion than exclusion, and the greatest idea will always win. If we can reinvent ourselves, that’s always better than repeating in a slightly different way. I’m a huge castle and history enthusiast myself, but our own passions have to come second.”

“We’ve had castle minifigures the past three series, I think,” Esa continued. “With the NINJAGO figure, we get a sword-holder, not medieval as such, but towards that warrior direction.”

Whether you need as many as you can or are only picking up the Boba Cup Fan to complete the Series 29 collection, this minifigure is made up of five pieces. Only two of those parts have any prints, and you can take a closer look at this minifigure in our review of 71052 Series 29.

The Boba Cup Fan is one of 12 new characters you find in the next series of minifigures out on May 1 for £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 each. Brick Search’s minifigure scanner can help you find the minifigures you need, and the minifigures you need multiples of. LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
