LEGO NINJAGO summer 2023 sets officially revealed

The latest wave of LEGO NINJAGO sets is finally here, marking the beginning of the Dragons Rising era with dragons, mechs, cars, a temple, and three brand new characters.

Unveiled by the LEGO Group today, the LEGO NINJAGO summer 2023 wave consists of a staggering 14 different sets, from basic 4+ models all the way up to an incredible 6,163-piece addition to the NINJAGO modular building line-up. Each of these sets heralds the start of a new era for the longstanding theme, which is undergoing a soft reboot for its new Dragons Rising series – complete with new characters.

“We wanted to create a new LEGO NINJAGO world with exciting characters and elements that invites new fans in and stays true to the iconic legacy,” said Nigel Kong, Head of Product for LEGO NINJAGO. “So, as well as welcoming back our well-known ninja, we are equally excited to introduce new fantastic ninja and dragon characters. This follows research we did with kids back in 2021, which showed they really wanted dragons to be front and centre of the new story.”

One of the theme’s three new characters is subsequently a tiny dragon named Riyu, who uses a brand new baby dragon mould. They’re joined by new ninja Sora and Arin, and together they must find NINJAGO’s classic team of ninja, who have ‘gone missing in a new world of merged realms’. The sets will arrive on shelves on June 1 – the same day the new LEGO NINJAGO: Dragons Rising TV show debuts.

The new series has been created with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, which the LEGO Group says has allowed for greater creativity and higher visual quality than ever before. The first 10 episodes will air in June, while another 10 episodes will follow in autumn. For now, scroll down to check out all the new LEGO NINJAGO summer 2023 sets.

71777 Kai’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Flip

Price: £8.99 / $10.99 / €9.99 Pieces: 72 Release date: June 1, 2023

One of three new gimmick-driven sets in the LEGO NINJAGO summer wave, 71777 Kai’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Flip includes an interactive toy designed first and foremost for kids (no surprises there) – but adult collectors may want it for that verty cool Kai minifigure, complete with hood and leg printing.

71778 Nya’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Drift

Price: £8.99 / $10.99 / €9.99 Pieces: 57 Release date: June 1, 2023

Nya gets her own spinjitzu set too in 71778 Nya’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Drift, which again includes easily the most detailed Nya minifigure in this summer wave. All those trans-light blue and pearl gold pieces could come in handy, too.

71779 Lloyd’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Spin

Price: £8.99 / $10.99 / €9.99 Pieces: 56 Release date: June 1, 2023

Rounding out the trio of Spinjitzu gimmick sets is 71779 Lloyd’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Spin, which – like the other two – comes in unique packaging. Yet again, it’s one for minifigure completists above all else.

71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle

Price: £18.99 / $19.99 / €20.99 Pieces: 103 Release date: June 1, 2023

The first of two sets aimed at 4+ builders in this range, 71789 Kai and Ras’s Car and Bike Battle offers plenty of play potential in the single box. There’s a dragon car and all-terrain vehicle for the two characters to race in, along with Kai and Lord Ras minifigures.

71790 Imperium Dragon Hunter Hound

Price: £18.99 / $19.99 / €20.99 Pieces: 198 Release date: June 1, 2023

A set that evokes long-retired LEGO theme The Legends of Chima in more ways than one, 71790 Imperium Dragon Hunter Hound is also reminiscent of the classic Vikings Fenris Wolf set from 2005. You get two classic ninja in the box in Lloyd and Jay, along with the new Imperium Claw General.

71791 Zane’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Race Car

Price: £29.99 / $34.99 / €34.99 Pieces: 307 Release date: June 1, 2023

Zane’s out of a mech and into a car for the summer wave, decked out in his ice-cold colour scheme of white, pearl gold and trans-light blue. He’s taking on a pair of Imperium Claw goons on hover flyers in 71791 Zane’s Dragon Power Spinjitzu Race Car, and is assisted by Cole, who presumably just has to run alongside everyone else.

71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer

Price: £42.99 / $47.99 / €47.99 Pieces: 384 Release date: June 1, 2023

One of two new ninja characters introduced specifically for Dragons Rising, Sora gets her very own mech in 71792 Sora’s Transforming Mech Bike Racer. Or is it a bike? Well, it’s both: the gimmick here is that the model can transform between the two states, which already makes it one of the most promising sets in the summer wave. Minifigures includes Sora, Arin and bad guy Rapton, along with baby dragon Riyu.

71793 Heatwave Transforming Lava Dragon

Price: £46.99 / $54.99 / €52.99 Pieces: 479 Release date: June 1, 2023

The smallest dragon in the new assortment includes what appears to be another new character in the red-haired Wyldfyre, who looks to be on the ninja’s side in the battle against the Imperium Claw villains. Kai and Lloyd are also in the box, while 71793 Heatwave Transforming Lava Dragon can apparently transform (it’s right there in the name) by activating its battle mode.

71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs

Price: £74.99 / $79.99 / €84.99 Pieces: 764 Release date: June 1, 2023

LEGO NINJAGO has found yet another new way to tackle mechs in 71794 Lloyd and Arin’s Ninja Team Mechs, which pops a smaller mech inside a bigger mech. It comes across like Arin’s training wheels, particularly with the Master Wu aesthetic applied to Lloyd’s mech, so hopefully we see that play out in the story too. The mechs can separate or combine as you please.

71795 Temple of the Dragon Energy Cores

Price: £84.99 / $94.99 / €94.99 Pieces: 1,029 Release date: June 1, 2023

Apparently set in the World Forest, 71795 Temple of the Dragon Energy Cores builds tall, incorporating trees, a bridge and a rope into its beautiful high-rise temple. One of the most immediately attractive models in this wave, the set includes six minifigures, among which are Jay, Cole, Kai – and three very interesting new villains…

71796 Elemental Dragon vs. The Empress Mech

Price: £94.99 / $129.99 / €104.99 Pieces: 1,038 Release date: June 1, 2023

NINJAGO has dragon sets. NINJAGO has mech sets. And now NINJAGO has a dragon and mech set in 71796 Elemental Dragon vs. The Empress Mech, which includes not only a stunning blue and trans-yellow dragon, but a very cool black and pearl gold mech, too. The visuals of this summer wave are on point. Riyu pops up again here, accompanying six regular minifigures.

71797 Destiny’s Bounty – Race Against Time

Price: £129.99 / $159.99 / €149.99 Pieces: 1,739 Release date: June 1, 2023

The latest iteration of NINJAGO’s best-known ship combines its new aesthetic with a tiny blue dragon, which can be rebuilt and incorporated into the vessel itself. 71797 Destiny’s Bounty – Race Against Time is specifically an airship, and includes Riyu the baby dragon alongside six minifigures – one of which marks Master Wu’s only appearance in the regular wave.

71798 Nya and Arin’s Baby Dragon Battle

Price: £26.99 / $34.99 / €31.99 Pieces: 157 Release date: June 1, 2023

The larger of the two 4+ sets in this wave packs in two dragons, a jet plane and a hideout cave, along with three minifigures of Nya, Arin and one of the new Imperium Claw baddies. You’ll also find Riyu in the box.

71799 NINJAGO City Markets

Price: £319.99 / $369.99 / €369.99 Pieces: 6,163 Release date: June 1, 2023

The latest addition to the LEGO NINJAGO modular building line-up is 71799 NINJAGO City Markets, which joins the ranks of 70620 NINJAGO City, 70657 NINJAGO City Docks and 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens. Spread over two 32×32-stud baseplates, it’s the biggest set in this subtheme yet, and packs in plenty of obscure characters – from Dareth and Miss Demeanor to Gayle Gossip and Hounddog McBrag. Take a closer look here.

Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
