The first LEGO brick patent was filed 65 years ago today

The patent for the classic LEGO brick is officially 65 years old today, January 28, 2023, as International LEGO day is here again.

While LEGO bricks have been on sale since 1949 and the LEGO Group was founded in 1932, the first patent for the iconic 2×4 LEGO brick was filed on January 28, 1958, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen – son of LEGO Group founder Ole Kirk Christiansen – exactly 65 years ago today.

To celebrate this, some of the LEGO VIP prints for various patents have been made available on the LEGO VIP Rewards Centre again, in case you want to display a part of LEGO history around your home.

The celebrations for this event vary per year and there’s usually not much to commemorate the occasion aside from the prints. However, in 2018 the 40290 60 Years of the LEGO Brick GWP was released as a limited-edition offering for the 60th anniversary of the patent.

While 65 years since the patent was filed is notable, it comes not long after the 90th anniversary of the LEGO Group and the release of nostalgic models including 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle and the day after Disney’s 100th-anniversary celebrations began on January 27, 2023, an event that the LEGO Group is partaking in.

While writing this report, a series of YouTube shorts have been added to the official LEGO YouTube channel commemorating sets from the decades and the timing of these videos is suspiciously close to the patent anniversary, meaning this may be an additional part of the celebrations for 2023.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
