LEGO might be lining up a successor for 10255 Assembly Square
10255 Assembly Square is retiring at the end of this year, but the LEGO Group is rumoured to be lining up an immediate Modular Building successor for 2024.
After six years on shelves, it’s finally time to say goodbye to LEGO Icons 10255 Assembly Square. As long-term fans of the sub-theme will know, 10255 was a commemorative set, designed to pay tribute to ten years of Modular Buildings. Not only was it built on a larger baseplate (32×48 as opposed to the standard 32×32 studs), the designers used that extra space to add in plenty of easter eggs and references to Modular Buildings of the past.
From the coffeeshop trappings that represent 10182 Café Corner and the tiny version of 10190 Market Street perched on a shelf to shared architectural styles with 10224 Town Hall, 10243 Parisian Restaurant, and so many more (to name but a few references), 10255 Assembly Square was a love letter to every Modular Building that came before. After six years on shelves, it will retire at the end of 2023, 16 years after the sub-theme began. Next year will mark 17 years and the rumoured release of a Modular Building that might match the larger size of 10255 Assembly Square physically.

According to rumours reported by Instagram user brick_clicker, a Modular Building is on its way in 2024, simply numbered 10326, that will include 4,014 elements. That’s 12 more than 10255 Assembly Square’s 4,002 pieces, essentially putting it at the same size. The prices of the two sets are also believed to match, with 2024’s new entry rumoured to release on January 1 for £259.99 / $299.99.
While this suggests that 10326 might rival 10255 Assembly Square in size, that far from means it will carry the same weight. Using the same amount of pieces doesn’t mean it will necessarily carry all the nods to past Modular Buildings. After all, the rumoured 2024 set is not tied to any obvious anniversary, so there is no need to include the same level of depth as 10255. Rather than marking a huge milestone for the sub-theme, it seems more likely that 10326 will be of a similar size, but use modern techniques and elements to tag Modular Buildings a step further.

For example, there are no details of the baseplate size as yet, meaning it could feasibly sit on an even larger baseplate – or a smaller one, choosing instead to quite literally reach for the skies in a taller-than-usual Modular Building. While every Modular Building tells its own story, it seems unlikely that the rumoured 2024 model will carry the same amount of references as 10255 Assembly Square.
Of course, we can’t know for sure what to expect from the rumoured set, or even if it’s definitely on its way, until we get official confirmation from the LEGO Group, so take this speculation with a pinch of salt for now.

Hi,
Isn’t it time to give up on the whole “more pieces means larger/bigger” thing. Todays sets incorporate many more smaller detail pieces that drive up piece count but could also mean less overall “plastic”. I’ve been going by weight for comparison sake. The SSD isn’t a smaller set because it has fewer pieces than the Millennium Falcon. IIRC weight wise it was nearly the same. Just my 1 cent worth
