LEGO promises ‘a few surprises’ later on in Formula 1 partnership

The LEGO Group has played it fairly safe with its Formula 1 partnership so far, but there are seemingly more ‘surprises’ in store.

The LEGO x Formula 1 partnership has already spawned a number of sets across City, Technic, Speed Champions, DUPLO, and Icons. While many of them are undoubtedly impressive, all the sets are essentially different variations of brick-built cars at different sizes and levels of complexity.

However, the LEGO Group’s head of product Lucas Vizcaino has now hinted in a recent interview with Speedcafe that motorsports fans should expect ‘a few surpises’ coming down the line, with reference to ‘quite a few things coming in the pipeline, both from our product perspective in the coming years, but also marketing-wise’.

“There are so many other things that we can tap into, and that is the direction,” he continued. “It’s not just the focus on the cars; yes, it is in year one, but as we move forward, we want to connect with you in a broader spectrum.”

Highlighting that the focus won’t just be on the cars raises the question about what, then, the focus will be. Some obvious options could include named drivers (which have been few and far between so far), helmets (like the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection), or artistic representations of famous race tracks in LEGO Art or Icons. There’s also room to expand exploration of Formula 1 with sets based on safety cars, more detail around the pit wall, and so on.

Speedcafe speculates that part of the future of the LEGO Formula 1 collaboration will be regionally targeted sets, although with a note that Lucas didn’t give any further details or indeed confirmation on that front. Could that mean Grand Prix-specific exclusives, or perhaps sets geared towards the home countries of Formula 1 drivers?

Only time will tell – and with Lucas noting that the focus is on the cars for year one at least, we might have to wait until 2026 and beyond to see any of these future ideas. However, for anyone who had high hopes of a varied LEGO Formula 1 partnership with the same depth and diversity as LEGO Space in 2024 (as we outlined here), the words from Lucas do seem to indicate that this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to brick-built Formula 1.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.

I just hope they do Speed Champion sets for the Audi and Cadillac cars when they join the grid in 2026. It would be weird to do all ten teams and not do the two new teams that join the grid a year later.

Audi is just sauber. Same it was when it was Alfa and when it was BMW. Cadillac needs its own car definitely but if they do Audi they have to do redo whole grid.

Drivers helmets and tracks would be amazing. As would more older cars like maybe Lauda, piquet, shumi, and the rest.
